The Okemos Legal Group, PLLC, is seeking pre-law undergraduates, paralegal students and law students for an internship program. This is an unpaid and very rigorous position requiring professionalism at all times. Interns who excel may qualify for a paid position. Some students may qualify to be placed in an internship to receive academic credit from their educational institution. Some interns also receive a stipend from their educational institution. We are looking for interns to begin for Spring semesters. Our Spring training is January 2, 2023 to January 5, 2023. We work with all colleges and law schools.

The Okemos Legal Group, PLLC, practices family law including divorce, custody, parenting time and child support. Guardianships, Conservatorships, and the probating of deceased estates. We handle criminal law, real property, landlord/tenant, civil litigation, appeals, bankruptcy, collections, business law and the general practice of law.

The Okemos Legal Group, PLLC, also runs a free legal clinic every Friday afternoon. This is a non-profit, 501 (c) charity. The legal clinic has no requirements for free services and does not discriminate against anyone regardless of gender, sex, age, income, national origin, immigration status, religion, race, or LGBTQ. All interns are invited to participate in the legal clinic. Interns receiving academic credit are required to participate.

The intern applicant must be a recent college graduate or in a current college, paralegal or law school program in any term or year. The student does not need to have had law courses yet, but only a sincere interest in the law to apply. This internship places interns according to their year in school and experience. The intern will be trained to handle as much legal responsibility as their skill level allows.

The senior attorney, Dr. Baranski has practiced law for over 30 years and he has taught philosophy, paralegal and law school courses for over three decades. There are weekly lectures on different areas of law for the attorneys and interns to attend. For example, the procedure in a criminal felony case, or how to probate a deceased estate These lectures are very basic and are designed to explain to interns the basics of a particular type of case. These lectures are conducted exactly as law school courses. This requires briefing and recitation of cases. This internship is designed for seriously minded students who intend on applying to law school. This is a very competitive program and those interns who are not serious or professional will be cut to be replaced with those that are.

The senior attorney will supervise all of the interns to make sure the internship is a valuable educational experience for each student.

Every week a lecture by an attorney from the firm gives a law school lecture on a legal topic to the attorneys, and interns. This is taught like any law school course with the expectation that the assigned material was read and briefed beforehand. These lectures are broadcast on Zoom, and recorded for later viewing.

Every Friday morning there is case assignments to the attorneys which the interns may sit on to learn the practical aspect of the practice of law.

The first Wednesday of the month there is case review where all the attorneys of the firm brief each other on the progress of their cases. All the interns and externs may sit on as a learning experience.

Daily, the interns sit in on client consultations in person, by telephone or by Zoom. During most weeks, at least one attorney has a Zoom court hearing that the interns may observe. The courts are starting to allow in person hearings and interns may accompany an attorney to court.

All Interns will be taught legal research and writing every week as a group. Interns will have the opportunity to draft motions, briefs, and do legal research.

All interns will also do daily tasks such as answering the telephone, making coffee, taking out trash, running errands, making photocopies, and greeting clients.

The number of hours for the intern is dependent upon the student's school requirements and their credit load. A minimum of 8-16 hours per week is required. Some interns put in as many as 40 hours per week. Some interns complete more than one semester, one semester with academic credit and one or more semesters without academic credit. The interns will give the law firm a work schedule where it is expected that the intern will follow exactly. There is no minimum GPA requirement only that the student be in good standing at their school. It is expected that the students are of the highest moral character and possess excellent ethics. It is expected that the interns conduct themselves in a professional manner, dress, and speech at all times. It is also expected that interns treat all persons with dignity and respect regardless of their background or views.

This is an on site, hands on experience so it is expected that the interns will be in the Lansing, Michigan area or a commute to the law offices. We have had students from Lansing Community College, Baker College, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan [Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn], Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, and in the summer semester additionally; Purdue University,[IN] Truman State University, [MO]and Haverford College [PA] and Miami University [OH]. There is an orientation week for interns each term. The orientation is mandatory for all interns to review the intern handbook, lectures on the law, professional responsibility, and critical thinking. These sessions start and end according to the Michigan State University calendar however, interns from other schools may start and end at different times. Orientation is the week before undergraduate classes start at Michigan State University Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Michigan State University classes start the following Monday and interns will begin their semester at the Okemos Legal Group, PLLC.

If a student is looking to just put something on their resume or they just need academic credit anything to satisfy an internship requirement for their program, our internship program is not for you. We demand more than answering the telephone and loading the copy machine.

Application Process:

1. The intern applicant must be able to physically come to the law firm address. Please do not apply if you are from out of state and cannot come to the Okemos Legal Group, PLLC location.

2. The intern applicant must submit resume and a cover letter stating why an internship at the Okemos Legal Group, PLLC is for them.

3. If the intern applicant passes the first step with their resume and cover letter, the intern applicant will receive an email with the intern handbook attached to read and know well.

4. If after studying the intern handbook, the intern applicant is still willing to participate in this rigorous program, the intern will contact the firm by email indicating that they are still interested. We know 20% of the potential applicants will voluntarily drop out of the application process after reading the handbook and knowing our expectations. The firm will set up an interview for the intern applicant according to the days and times the intern indicated their availability.

5. If the intern applicant is successful at the interview and are asked to be an intern, the intern must appear professionally dressed with their laptop and arrive at 8 a.m. on the first day of the four days of training..
