AMW Public Waldorf, a school of choice in the Sacramento City Unified School District, serves students in early kindergarten through eighth grade. As Title I school, it is the second public Waldorf school in the United States and serves an extremely diverse population.

For the betterment of our students’ world views, there is a strong desire for representation of adults of similar backgrounds in the school faculty. Therefore, we strongly encourage applicants from marginalized communities, including black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+, and other populations traditionally underrepresented in educational settings.

JOB DESCRIPTION

AMW’s Spanish instructor is a part-time (30 hours per week) position. The Spanish instructor will be on campus Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Each class (in first through eighth grades) will have 1-3 weekly opportunities to experience Spanish class. Students at AMW begin working with the Spanish instructor in first grade, continuing through the grades. The below subjects have historically been offered; though we welcome an experienced Spanish instructor to introduce their own projects and recommendations.

  • First – third grade: Cultural study and introduction to second language; For the first three years of instruction, the students are taught through the use of Spanish songs, finger plays, games, stories and poems. The “shower of language” is needed for the students to feel the character of the language. The students create their own texts by making entries into their Spanish lesson books as a keepsake of what has been presented in each grade.
  • Fourth – Sixth grade: Students are introduced to the study of Spanish grammar. There are whole class activities that require student participation. These include verb games, skits, riddles, and tongue twisters. At this time the students are ready for the reading of the Spanish word. The student created Spanish lesson book now becomes a resource for the student where the accuracy of information is stressed. In grade six, homework in Spanish is first introduced with the beginning of the study of the ancient Aztec civilization.
  • Seventh grade: A continuation of the study of ancient cultures with the focus on Maya and Inca civilizations. It is also a time for students to express their Spanish voice. At this point, the student is asked to speak as an individual through a Spanish interview and a biographical report on a person who influenced the Latin Culture. The preterite and imperfect past verb tenses are explored through these activities.
  • Eighth Grade: Begins with a review of previous years’ Spanish lessons. Future verb tenses and a classical reading selection, “Don Quixote de la Mancha” are introduced. Although participation/effort marks are provided for grades 1-6 students at the trimester, only 7th and 8th grades are provided with letter grade for each quarter.
  • Special Day Classes: AMW has two mixed grade SDC classrooms, one for grades 1-3 and another for grades 4-6. We anticipate lessons for these students will be developed with input from the teachers.

All materials are funded by the AMW Community Guild. Position requires collaboration with grades teachers and administration to schedule lessons prior to the beginning of instruction.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

School begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3:12 p.m. Thursdays are minimum days ending at 2:12, followed by a staff meeting in which the Spanish instructor participates.

While the Community Guild is active in fundraising and holding enrichment events, school leadership also recognizes a great portion of its students come from households with minimal disposable income and/or ability for adults to participate. The school is dedicated to ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, receive the same loving Waldorf education.

AMW transitioned to a Waldorf-inspired curriculum in 2012, the second public Waldorf elementary school in the nation. Since that time, it has steadily attracted talented classroom teachers, specialty teachers and administrators. The team of educators work collaboratively to offer unique opportunities to the school’s nearly 400 students.

The ever-improving campus features multiple garden spaces; a greenhouse; outdoor classroom areas; an outdoor cafeteria space; and woodworking, music and Handwork rooms. Annual celebrations include a rose ceremony, Whole World Festival of Lights, May Faire and various field trips to locations near and far.

Due to insufficient District funding, the Spanish instructor position is funded entirely by the AMW Community Guild, a parent-teacher organization deeply committed to fostering both Waldorf education ideals, as well as diversity and inclusion throughout the community. This is an independent contractor position and is not an employee of the Sacramento City Unified School District.
