Senior Operations Engineer - Multiple US cities - Work From Home Job at Lumen
This position is for Swing/Second Shift responsible for applying in-depth knowledge of the transport network and networking protocols along with excellent communication skills in order to perform in-depth troubleshooting of all issues that arise. The primary function is to have a global view of the network understanding maintenance impacts, new design/products before they are implemented. This knowledge is gained by working closely with vendors, Architecture & Engineering (A&E) and product to develop the design and operational model for the implementations. Responsible for resolving transport network problems. Performs critical function within the network repair process and can ultimately impact the NOC's ability to meet Network Availability and Restoration commitments made to customers. These individuals are primarily driven by projects in the network that require greater attention to detail and management from a more advanced technical resource.
Additionally, this position will support the Network and Customer Transformation organization and is an opportunity to work in a DevOps environment. In this role, you will be responsible for the creation and support of scripts, bots, and/or tools to facilitate automation and technician efficiency. The goal of our organization is to increase network automation, accuracy, and efficiency resulting in large-scale network operational excellence. Ideal candidate has experience with full-stack development, a high-level understanding of networking, and is enthusiastic about creating functional and user-friendly tools.
Job Responsibilities
Manage large scale projects including OPS requirements, assist the customer repair centers with complex trouble resolution, document/test reviews, Methods of Procedures (MOP) reviews, maintenance scheduling, etc. 35%
Manage DevOps projects working closely with the Network and Customer Transformation organization individually or in collaborative teams to design, develop, and deliver tools, scripts, and other automation solutions for clients throughout the Lumen organization. Develops and implements tools that support standards, bug tracking, impairment monitoring to help ensure network stability and reduce events. Utilizes these tools to maintain network standards and manage impairments. Provides training for junior members of the team to use these tools. 30%
Maintains global view of network activities to function as a high-level guardian of the network. Understands and evaluates all network technologies, designs and product offerings. Troubleshoots and analyzes complex network designs/issues and provides short/long term resolution plans. Provides technical feedback to engineering concerning design/products. 25%
Works closely with Vendors, Architecture, Engineering, Test and Product on all network designs and modification to ensure operational readiness. 10%
Experience / Knowledge
- 6+ years of technical experience working with networks and communications equipment in a network operations center environment
- Advanced understanding of DS0 to OCn level services, including analog and digital signaling
- Advanced SONET, DWDM, Ethernet multiplexing and troubleshooting techniques
- Nortel, Cisco Transport, Ciena Transport, ULH, ONI, Tellabs, Nokia Transport, Fujitsu Transport, Infinera, Alcatel Lucent, Exfo, Digital Lightwave and T-Berd testing equipment
- Advanced remote provisioning and troubleshooting experience
- Comprehensive communications skills working with multiple vendors, customers, organizations, and different layers of management
- Detailed knowledge of TL1
- Advanced ability to use PM data for effective trouble shooting and fault isolation
- MS Office application suite
- Effective workload management
- Represent transport services regarding new technology deployments
- Ability to resolve the most complex customer/network problems
- Proven hands-on experience solving complex business problems using orchestration tools such as Ansible, Itential, Anuta, Salt, etc.
- Familiarity with Agile methodology of development and user of Git (or similar) for version control
- Understanding of XML, JSON, and data structure fundamentals
Other Requirements
6+ years of experience with a BA/BS degree or equivalent education and experience. Proficiency in scripting languages. Expert in respective technology. 10 years of experience in technical support or engineering role preferred. Advanced computer skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Shift work and on-call flexibility. Attention to detail. Good organizational skills. Experienced in analyzing complex issues, distilling and communicating their relevant aspects. Strong leadership and mentoring skills. Ability to proactively identify risks/issues, and drives action to mitigate/resolve them. Ability to manage relationships with vendors, appropriately communicating priority and urgency.
