NOTICE OF EXTERNAL JOB OPPORTUNITYPosting #SG-366-22ESenior Laboratory TechnicianDiverThe Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is recruiting for Senior Laboratory Technician - Diver in Carson at our Laboratory Section of our Joint Water Pollution Control Plant. The Sanitation Districts are a non-civil service public agency separate from Los Angeles County government. The Districts serve the wastewater and solid waste management needs of approximately 5.6 million people across a service area that covers approximately 850 square miles and encompasses 78 cities and unincorporated territory within the county. We are nationally recognized for innovative engineering practices in wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and power generation. LOCATION: TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, LABORATORIES SECTION, MARINE BIOLOGY GROUP, JOINT WATER POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT, WATER QUALITY LABORATORYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To lead and participate in the collection of environmental samples as well as the performance of a variety of routine and complex non-standardized chemical, biological or microbiological tests and analyses.JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of a Supervising Scientist, the incumbent conducts or participates in the collection and analysis of a variety of biological, chemical, and physical oceanographic samples. Within the laboratory, the incumbent provides taxonomic identification analysis of marine benthic invertebrates as assigned; performs sediment sorting for infaunal specimens; performs fish tissue resection for bioaccumulation studies; processes and analyzes aquatic sediments for qualitative determinations and quantitative grain size analysis; uses laboratory equipment, including a variety of microscopes and balances; maintains taxonomic documents and resources as directed by a biologist; provides training to lower level laboratory technicians. At sea, the incumbent participates in a broad array of biological and chemical sampling and analysis; assists in oceanographic sampling by means of CTD water column profiling and light irradiance measuring packages; utilizes SCUBA to perform outfall infrastructure assessments while piloting an electric scooter, perform fish collections using a pole spear, perform rocky reef biological assessments including underwater fish, invertebrate, and algae taxonomic identifications; operates and navigates a 26 foot motor vessel in open coastal waters; rigs and deploys oceanographic sampling gear such as otter trawls, sediment grabs, water sampling devices; uses shipboard winches and capstans or other specialized gear and equipment; provides technical lead training to lower level laboratory technicians; and performs related duties as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license for positions performing on-the-job driving; a Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) certification -AND- Three years of increasingly responsible laboratory experience involving the performance of standardized chemical, biological or microbiological tests and analyses, preferably in sewage or wastewater operations. A bachelor's degree in a pertinent laboratory science may substitute for two years of the required experience. NOTE: This is a specialized position requiring verifiable scientific diving experience or equivalent (50+ recreational dives), the ability to pass a diving physical examination, and meet established LACSD SCUBA Dive Team minimal standards in performance of scientific diving. This specialized position also requires verifiable experience or coursework in piloting small marine vessels in coastal waters. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience performing taxonomic identification of marine invertebrates and fishes; experience handling and operating specialized marine sampling gear including mechanical and electronic devices and sensors; recent experience piloting a marine vessel; American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scientific diver certificated.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The competitive selection process may cover the knowledge of: 2016 TNI Standards; Horizon LIMS; principles and procedures of scientific dive surveys; dive theory; fundamentals and principles of water quality biology and chemistry as they pertain to established marine and oceanographic analytical methods, techniques, equipment, and materials; fundamentals and principles of small vessel piloting and operations; fundamentals of marine fishes and macroinvertebrate taxonomy; the classification, morphology, ecology, and distribution of marine benthic infauna; principles of data analysis and statistical inference; standard laboratory techniques, equipment, and materials. The ability to: perform scientific SCUBA diving; pilot a small motorized vessel in coastal waters; conduct detailed taxonomic studies of marine invertebrates; use compound and stereo microscopes for extended periods of time; sort and identify marine organisms; draw sound conclusions regarding the validity of the data produced; perform fish tissue resection; lead and train lower level laboratory technicians; conduct biological sampling at sea under a wide range of sea conditions.
