Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) provides residents East of the Anacostia River access to the best-in-class facilities, programs and partnerships in arts and culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health and well-being. Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) envisions a future in which the residents East of the Anacostia River experience vital, thriving communities characterized by social, cultural, economic, and racial equity. In order to combat past and current structural inequities, Building Bridges develops and manages facilities and programs in Wards 7and 8 including the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), THEARC Farm, THEARC Theater, 11th Street Bridge Park, and Skyland Workforce Center. In 2005, Building Bridges first facility was THEARC at 110,000 and since then has grown to 203,000 square feet, representing the largest social service, multisector, nonprofit collaboration in the country.

Building Bridges Across the River’s (Building Bridges) Senior Equitable Development Manager will advance the organization’s Theory of Change to remove structural barriers to social and economic mobility to build a more equitable city. The Senior Equitable Development Manager will oversee the implementation of the 11th Street Bridge Park’s equitable development plan (EDP.) These tasks include: manage existing partnerships with non-profits such as LISC, Manna, Anacostia BID, Department of Transportation, Trust for Public Land, Anacostia BID, etc.; manage EDP strategies such as the Community Leadership Empowerment Workshop (CLEW) and CLEW national curricula; seek and develop new partnerships with organizations / agencies to help realize the EDP’s strategies; lead effort engaging with key stakeholders to create updated equitable development strategies including new Health and Wellness action items; and supervise Equitable Development Manager.


Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

EQUITABLE DEVELPOMENT PLAN MANAGEMENT:

  • Manage collaborations with existing EDP partners ensuring recommendations are successfully implemented and deadlines are met.
  • Oversee Equitable Development Manager who is in charge of 5 city workforce cohort, Ward 8 Home Buyers Club, mobile small business kiosk and small business preservation pilot. Meet regularly with this staff and set clear quarterly deliverables to ensure goals are met.
  • Create new partnerships with non-profits and government agencies to implement the Equitable Development Plan recommendations.
  • Manage third party evaluation of EDP strategies.
  • Work with Development team to identify and cultivate new funding prospects for the implementation of EDP strategies.
  • Ensure that the activities are in line with Building Bridges Across the River’s mission and goals.
  • Stay abreast of research and best practice in equity and inclusion and surface implications.
  • Develop feedback loops and systems to collect input, analyze data (both qualitative and quantitative), and share progress.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

  • Manage on-going community outreach efforts for the EDP including regular public presentations to community groups, business owners, funders and government officials.
  • Work to leverage Equitable Development strategies with existing investments / programs in adjacent neighborhoods.
  • Manage Equitable Development Advisory Committee which meets regularly to provide feedback and guidance on the EDP implementation.
  • Help plan regular community meetings providing an update on the EDP implementation.
  • Build partnerships with organizations to assist with marketing, programming and outreach.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Economic Development, and/or related experience.
  • Deep knowledge of adjacent 11th Street Bridge Park communities in Wards 8, 7 and 6.
  • 2-3 years of experience implementing programs in local communities.
  • Excellent written (including editing and proofreading) and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand and translate the 11th Street Bridge Park’s mission and to develop complex written materials to summarize the essence of large-scale projects and collaborations
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows OS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and the ability to use or learn technology used at the 11th Street Bridge Park.
  • Proven ability to manage a complex budget
  • Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to investigate an issue, ask thoughtful questions and recommend possible solutions. Able to build a logical approach to addressing problems by drawing on own knowledge and experience or by seeking other references or resources as appropriate.
  • Able to set short-and long-term planning goals in line with program priorities and available resources. A task-oriented style, with a focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization while delivering a high-quality work product. Able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy and maintain attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties.
  • Intellectually curious, creative and strategic thinker. Able to think out of the box, challenge conventional norms, and try new approaches.

  • This position will be expected to participate in evening and weekend programming such as festivals, community presentations and regular outreach events on as needed basis.

Salary & Benefits:

This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $90,000-$95,000. Benefits include PTO, Holiday Pay, Medical, Dental, Vision and ability to participate in the 401(K) Plan. Building Bridges is an equal opportunity employer.
