The successful candidate in this position will be either an RN or an LPN.


GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Provides medical, health, and wellness services to students at the assigned school; maximizes educational opportunity by minimizing absence due to illness; promotes good health habits.


SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the general supervision of the school principal (or assistant principal) and the Coordinator, Pupil Personnel Services in accordance with the policies and regulations adopted by the school division. Incumbents have no direct employee or student supervisory responsibility but have responsibility for training staff in medication administration and clinic procedures and providing medical care to students.

State and local health department regulations; Hopewell City Public Schools policy, regulation, and rules, and public health guidelines for school nurses; state Board of Nursing policies; federal & state OSHA regulations.


CONTACTS

Students, parents, public health personnel, physicians, school administration, faculty, other support personnel and certain central office staff.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated.)


Assesses and treats student and staff health needs, complaints, injuries.


Provides emergency medical care for students, assessing the extent of injury and/or illness and recommending additional treatment/referral.


Provides routine medical care for students such as administering medication, as prescribed by physician and/or permitted by parent/guardian.


Coordinates procedures for sending an ill/injured student home or to medical treatment facilities.


Screens vision and hearing, including referrals and follow-up.


Serves as a health resource person to school and community.


Promotes wellness through publications, presentations, and visits to classrooms.


Communicates with students, staff, faculty, other medical resource persons, and parents/guardians to share information and to determine appropriate actions.


Utilizes equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment, general office equipment for recording diagnosis and treatment, and presentation materials.


Administers all treatments prescribed by the student’s personal physician within the guidelines of the Virginia Nurse Practice Act. (Such as catheterization, tube feeding, suctioning, and care of colostomy).


Trains staff on health issues and medication administration.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Good knowledge of principles and practices of emergency and routine nursing care for school-age children as well as adult staff and faculty.


Good knowledge of vision screening and referral procedures.


Good knowledge of medical and social service resources available in the community.


Ability to perform first aid, CPR, or other emergency treatment.


Ability to prepare and present health and wellness information.


Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


Ability to use medical equipment for diagnosis/treatment and general office equipment for recording information.


Good organizational, human relations and communication skills.
