Chief Objective of Position
The Resident-In-Counseling is responsible for the following: to assist students in defining and accomplishing personal and academic goals; to provide counseling, including on-call crisis intervention, to assist students in overcoming specific personal, educational or behavioral problems that interfere with healthy living and success at the University; to support the development of students by helping all students enhance their growth potential and thereby benefit from their academic and social environment; and, to offer preventative support by anticipating environmental conditions that may negatively influence student welfare and to initiate interventions that will neutralize such conditions.
Work Tasks
- To provide individual and group counseling, consultation, and outreach focused on developmental needs and issues of students.
- Provide on-call crisis counseling and intervention support to students in need.
Provide psycho-education about anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, eating concerns, substance abuse, sexual assault and other topics of concern to the welfare of students.
Support student adjustment and student learning in the residence hall through appropriate outreach and educational programs and services.
Provide consulting services as needed concerning student issues related to counseling, development and behavior management in the residential community.
Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service

- Report unsafe work conditions to your supervisor.
- Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required
- Knowledge concerning individual and group counseling theory and practice.
- Skilled in providing individual and group counseling.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong abilities in counseling, outreach programming and communication.

- Knowledge concerning counseling special populations including those who are at-risk for suicide and victims of sexual assault and substance abuse.
- Knowledge of principles of consultation.
- Knowledge of student development.
- Skilled in providing individual and group counseling to special populations including those who are at-risk students for suicide and victims of sexual assault and substance abuse.
- Ability to plan, manage, and administer concurrent tasks meeting a variety of needs.
Required Education
Master’s degree in counseling, counselor education, or a closely related discipline, at time of start date.
Course work and appropriate training should include individual and group counseling, assessment of suicide, clinical theory, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, and standards of ethical practice.

Preferred Education
Course work or training in working with anxiety, depression, adjustment, survivors of sexual assault, substance abuse and at-risk suicide populations.
Experience Required
Experience providing individual or group counseling.
Experience Preferred
Experience in crisis counseling and intervention to include on-call status and emergency hospitalization procedures. Experience in providing individual and group counseling in a college/university setting. Experience in providing outreach programs for resident advisors and residential populations. Experience in behavioral management techniques to assist students experiencing difficulty in adjusting to the University environment.
