The Refugee Student Coordinator is a part-time position within the Catholic Charities ESL Program. The Refugee Student Coordinator completes intakes and assessments of refugee students, places them in classes, and teaches one or two classes. The Coordinator, working under the supervision of the ESL Program Manager and with the assistance of the Volunteer Coordinator, will also help place some refugee clients in tutoring pairs and small groups as necessary. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Complete intake paperwork and assess new refugee students. 40%

Prepare lessons for and teach 1-2 refugee classes and complete all attendance, class notes, and goal forms for students. 40%

Assist in the preparation of reports for various funding sources. 10%

Attend monthly staff meeting, participate in program improvement process, and attend professional development trainings. 5%

Other refugee program related duties as assigned by the ESL Program Manager. 5%

  • Use of hands, wrists, and fingers and occasional lifting or moving up to 30 lbs of supplies will be required.
  • Noise and/or level of distractions in the work environment ranges from moderate to high, depending on the activities of the other programs.
  • Visiting off-site locations may be needed on occasion in this program and each site varies in amenities. Flexibility in dealing with varied physical environments is a benefit in this position.

The primary location for this position is the main IRS office in Harrisburg. The part-time Refugee Student Coordinator may also meet occasionally off site with community partners, so the ability to operate a vehicle will be necessary. This position also has administrative responsibilities, which require a combination of computer work and face-to-face time with clients. In addition, all ESL Program employees are also expected to take part in continuous program improvement meetings and professional development activities.

Education and Experience

  • Education: BA required
  • Certifications or Licenses Required: State Police, FBI and ChildLine Clearances, and a valid PA Driver’s License and adequate automobile insurance according to agency policy.
  • Experience: Work/volunteer background with immigrants and/or refugees is required, second language skills a plus.
