Under the leadership of Monona Parks & Recreation supervisors, the recreation program instructor helps plan and implement engaging activities for children enrolled in the Monona Parks & Recreation’s youth sports and recreation programming. Our programs are primarily for children PreK through 5th grade. Some programs may include preschool (ages 2-3), and grades 6-10.Program instructors teach and supervise a variety of different programs throughout the day, including soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, dance, tennis, etc., and short-stay, drop-in child care. Instructors need not have expertise in any given activity but must be able to generally teach a wide variety of recreational activities. Training is provided.This is a seasonal position with four seasonal windows: June-August (all positions currently filled for 2022)August-OctoberNovember- FebruaryMarch-MayHours for this position are generally evening shifts Monday–Friday with occasional weekend shifts. Weekly hours will vary from 5-20, depending on availability, experience, and training.Wage range is $15-$20 per hour based on experience, education, and qualifications. Determining Pay*: Just starting out- $15 General Education/and or Experience-$16 Specific Degree/ and or Experience- $18 Advanced Degree/ and or Experience- $20 (+)Pay is based on recognizing the experience, skill and education an employee needs to perform the job.*$.25 pay increase per year or per season
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Lead, demonstrate and instruct, and supervise participants in recreation games/activities.Provide an interactive, positive, supportive, fun, and safe environment for the participants while effectively teaching provided lesson plans.Assist in the development of program curriculum and lesson plans.Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, daily attendance, and participant information.Listen and respond to questions and concerns from parents and participants, promptly report concerns to supervisor.Provide clear communication to and from supervisor, participants and parents.Inform supervisor of any problems or concerns regarding equipment, facilities, participants and/or spectators.Prepare program equipment, supplies and materials, and assist in the set up and cleanup of facilities.Attend all required meetings and trainings.Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 15 years of age at the start of employment and eligible to work in the United States.A high school diploma and valid WI driver's license strongly preferred but not required.Minimum of 1+ years of working with youth/adults in a childcare/recreation setting strongly preferred but not required .Must be certified in First Aid and CPR, at a minimum. These may be obtained onsite during staff training.Other certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, etc.) are a plus.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Must be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid and assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).Strong oral communication skills, and the ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions, including health and safety protocols related to COVID-19Must pass a background check if over 18 and provide other forms and details.Ability to travel in and around Monona to program site locations.Ability to work varied hours, including some evenings and weekends, and to be punctual and dependable.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Minimum Physical AbilitiesThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
