Position Information


The Recreation Department of the City of Pittsburg, CA provides programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the community through aquatics, Senior Center, Small World Park, and other recreational activities and events. The Recreation Department fills Recreation Leader I vacancies in any of the following areas: Events, Small World Park, Youth Sports, Buchanan Swim Center and Youth Activities Leaders. Some assignments may handle rental fees for facilities and meeting rooms. For the upcoming late Winter season, hiring priority is in the Youth Sports assignment.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. We have about 290 full time employees and about 350 employees total (depending on the season). Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community and Economic Development (Building, Economic Development, Code Enforcement, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency), Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Engineering, Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment). Fire Protection services are provided by the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire Department. Pittsburg’s total budget for FY 21/22 is $225.9 million and a General Fund budget of $51.3 million.

Examples of Duties

Activities Aide:
Assists in the preparation of City events. Light custodial duties. Recreation Leaders may be required to set up, take down and transport equipment for events. Position may require a valid California Driver's License. Positive attitude and excellent customer service skills are required.

Park Aide:
Assist in park operations: general park clean-up (restrooms, empty trash containers, raking, sweeping, and manual watering); play equipment safety checks; carousel ride spotter and whale ride operator (minimum age 16 yrs.); set-up and take down of private and special events; take picnic site reservations and ticket booth operation. Interact well with small children and provide excellent customer service.

Youth Sports:
Keep records and scores for various youth and adult sports activities. Scorekeepers must have a general understanding of the sports programs, such as: softball, basketball and football.

Youth Activities Leader I:
Assist in supervision of recreation programs. The position requires one year of experience working with youth in a group setting.

Swim Aide: Provide swimming instruction to all age groups and ability levels; provide clerical assistance to pool staff; sell admissions to the pool and work snack bar concessions, keep a record of all transactions; administer first aid; perform maintenance of office and snack bar. Training in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR is required and may be provided during employment.

Lifeguard: Rescue swimmers in distress; enforce pool rules; administer first aid, perform general maintenance of pool and surrounding area. Lifeguards are required to possess an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Responding to Emergency training. Lifeguards should have refined swimming skills and the ability to swim 20 laps; ability to deal with stressful situations. Qualified applicants must be at least 15 years of age.

Selection Process

2. Departmental Hiring Interviews: Accepted applicants will be interviewed by supervisory staff and offered the hourly position if successful.

3. Background Check: If applicable, candidates will need to complete a background that may consist of fingerprinting, drug screening, TB test, and any other required screening.

4. New Hire Paperwork: After completion of the background process (if applicable), successful candidates will complete new hire paperwork and begin work soon after.


  • Police Trainee receives medical, dental, sick leave and retirement benefits while in the Police Academy.
  • Other seasonal employees receive sick leave and are limited to 999 hours per fiscal year.
