JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Resident Services Manager, the Recreation Leader performs direct supervision of youth in a wide variety of educational and recreational programs to include planning, promoting, organizing, coordinating and implementing recreational and sports activities for resident youth of the Housing Authority. Work requires contact with the public. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the Resident Services Manager in determining what types of new activities will motivate interest and participation.
  • Plans, promotes, conducts, and supervises recreational activities, social activities, and special events for resident children/youth of public housing to ensure safety and program compliance.
  • Coordinates social and recreational programs with other community agencies.
  • Assists with the outreach and recruitment of teams; recruits, trains, and directs volunteers and assists in developing and meeting program goals.
  • Promotes good sportsmanship, good citizenship, and public relations among programs to set and project a positive image of youth and Public Housing.
  • As needed, conducts training classes on rules and improvement of the athletic skill level of the program participants.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment; as necessary sets up equipment for programs and assumes responsibility for issuing and receiving any apparatus and equipment used by participants. Processes requisitions to replace worn, lost or missing items.
  • Maintains up-to-date schedules for special programs, events, tournaments, classes, etc.
  • Assists in making visual aids and posters promoting community recreational programs, distributes flyers and other literature.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety and well-being of program participants.
  • Prepares accident and other reports on program activities as required.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service training sessions
  • Works closely with Resident Council and provides all necessary support as required.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have previous experience working with computers and various educational software programs.
  • Must hold a valid Texas Driver License and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record. May operate Authority vehicle while on Housing Authority business.
  • Ability to work hours other than 8-5, to include weekends and evenings, in variable weather conditions and overtime as required meeting Housing Authority goals and objectives.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year experience working with a recreation program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of various computer educational software, sports, games, crafts, and other recreational activities. Knowledge of first aid.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of a well-organized recreation program. Knowledge of rules and regulations of a variety of individual and team sports.
  • Ability to communicate, interact effectively and work with children.
  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions; works effectively with others and the public.
  • Ability to plan and organize workloads, follow standardized guidelines to perform routine duties and prevent harm to self and the public.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position.
  • Completion of Food Handler’s Permit, CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain at time of employment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment and comply with safety requirements.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of necessary information.
  • Ability to utilize supplies and equipment properly and without waste.
  • Ability to works in a safety conscious manner, which insures that safe work practices are used in order not to pose a risk to self and others.
  • Ability to successfully complete related training or classes as assigned by the Housing Authority.
  • Ability to complies with company policies and procedures, local, state, and government regulations; and maintain a dependable attendance record.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift or move a minimum of 25 pounds. Routinely may be required to exert considerable physical effort while assisting in moving and carrying heavy objects in excess of 25 pounds. Ability to work, move, walk, stand, and bend for prolonged periods of time (up to 8 hours), with occasional climbing, kneeling, stooping, reaching at, below, and/or above shoulder height, bending, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling and carrying required. Ability to work in variable weather conditions. May be exposed to extremes of weather and temperatures.
