Hourly A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Project Engineer position will support the implementation of the Santa Clara University Capital Plan efforts. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Planning & Projects, this position supports in creating the physical environment required for the university to accomplish its mission. Among the specific responsibilities will be taking direction and guidance in the creation and construction of renovations at the University; providing support for the financial transactions and tracking needed to manage projects; maintain the project financial accounts; coordinating consulting services from the university community regarding needs assessments, engineering support, and general support for SCU Planning and Project's project managers.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, Budget, Schedule, Secure Contracts, Execute and Close-Out Individual small renovation projects.

Bid out and negotiate small renovation projects; work in an organized and efficient manner; secure "best value" for the University on projects that vary in cost between $1,000 and $1,000,000.

Reconcile project budgets against approved funding sources. Report discrepancies to the Director and Assistant Director.

Provide project support to the Director, Assistant Director, Project Manager and Architect.

Develop tracking process for RFI, project reviews, finance, submittal reviews, comment process in support of large capital projects.

Take notes at construction planning, Owner-Architect-Contractor, and Operations project meetings. Follow through on action items as instructed by the Director and Assistant Director.

Work directly with Operations Administration staff to pay vendors, clear liens and ensure timely accounting of large and small projects.

Update and maintain schedules that guide project, program and University personnel actions. Ensure that schedule is properly communicated to all parties, highlighting interdependence between each large capital project and the University programs.

Coordinate financial and engineering support from Operation, general contractor and University colleagues.

Support project closeout and distribute as-built information with other departments in University Operations and the campus.

Oversee the condition of the Planning & Project Archive Room keeping it clean and organized.

Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

E. QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.

This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Bachelor degree required with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience required, and 2- 3 years directly in project management experience preferred.

Valid California driver's license and excellent driving record.

Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office & Project and AutoCAD experience preferred, with skills (or ability to learn) in AiM (Facility Mgt program) and Workday (Campus Financial program).

Effective written and verbal communications skills required.

Excellent interpersonal and human relation skills required.

Demonstrated problem solving skills.

Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and common sense appropriate to the related circumstances.
