Job Title: Peer Recovery Specialist for LEAD Program

Schedule: Monday - Friday / 10am till 6pm

Job Scope: The primary goal of this LEAD Peer Recovery Specialist position is to assist the LEAD targeted case managers, to facilitate, manage and coordinate the linkage of LEAD clients with other service providers, recovery agencies and institutions. The LEAD Peer Recovery Specialist will also provide effective and ethically appropriate services to peers that include peer advocacy, mentoring, coaching, education, support, and wellness and recovery. To support this goal the following objectives/responsibilities are expected:

  • Accompany participants to appointments in the community and provides support and advocacy as needed
  • Always maintains professional boundaries with participants, case managers, police, and outside agencies
  • Maintains open, effective, and appropriate communication with case managers, police, and LEAD workgroup members
  • Communicates effectively with clients and staff by demonstrating tact, compassion, respect, and courtesy

Educational Requirements: Candidates must have a high school diploma but an associate degree or B.A is preferred. Candidates who are Certified Peer Recovery Specialist for the state of Maryland are preferred. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.

Experience: Candidates must have experiential expertise living with a mental health and/or substance use disorder and be knowledgeable of the integrated services provided by the public behavioral health system in Baltimore City. Individuals must be knowledgeable on the Recovery Model, Person-Centered Care and that are WRAP trained are given priority.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Moderate walking, standing, climbing stairs and sitting required. Transportation of clients and outreach supplies. Light to moderate lifting.Works generally in well-lighted and ventilated office environment with standard office supplies and/or equipment. Required to spend a large portion of the workday engaging clients in the community at shelters or the streets or in their homes. May be requested to work weekends for outreach events and/or training opportunities. Must accompany clients to appointments as needed and transport them in a company vehicle. May be required to work flexible hours in order to achieve position objectives.

Hazards: Potential exposure to highly charged stressful, and emotional situations; potential exposure to aggressive encounters.

  • BCRI serves Baltimore as the city’s first and only comprehensive behavioral health crisis provider, offering 24/7 crisis hotline and mobile crisis teams, withdrawal management services, crisis residential alternatives, HIV/HCV testing and linkage to care, in-home support and critical incident response teams, along with community and police education services.
  • BCRI provides behavioral health crisis stabilization services to Baltimore City residents regardless of ability to pay, currently treating approximately 900 individuals between the ages of 18-65 in its crisis residential unit (CRU) and 500 individuals in its medical 3.7 detoxification (Detox) unit per year.
  • Most of the population served by BCRI lives below the Federal Poverty Line and qualifies for medical assistance or is uninsured and more than half of this population is homeless.
  • Approximately 75% of clients served have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder.
