Why does the job exist?

The Sports Authority Program Coordinator is responsible for effectuating the statutory provisions of the Sports Authority and developing and executing the strategy of a sustainable program that quantifies and qualifies the economic activity and visitation from sports, based on data, research and other benchmarks. The Sports Authority Program Coordinator will focus on projects and initiatives that foster job creation, optimize sports and sports tourism business opportunities that maintain or expand economic viability.

How does it get done?

The Sports Authority Program Coordinator works closely with the Department's Research Division to transform data elements into useful and applicable information to inform economic development techniques and programs. Additionally, the Sports Authority Program Coordinator will monitor the economic impact of sports tourism over time, using data provided by the Research Division, and make necessary changes to ensure continued economic growth. This position will aid communities statewide in understanding and conveying the business case aspects for attracting investments, products or businesses in the sports and sports tourism realm.

The Sports Authority Program Coordinator fosters relationships with communities statewide that seek to diversify their local economy through sports and sports tourism development initiatives and actively establish and maintain public relations with representatives of the sports, sports tourism, and general tourism industry, stakeholders, investors, DMOS/Chambers of Commerce, trade associations, area development organizations, and other groups.

The Sports Authority Program Coordinator builds rapport with industry and corporate executives, to spur interest in New Mexico as a location for industry; and to that realizes the duty to maintain objectivity and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of complex and potentially sensitive projects.

The Sports Authority Program Director is responsible for applying research and data into areas of business expansions and sales, reviewing providing technical counseling on preparation of reports and materials submitted by local development groups to business leaders, providing guidance, advice, and assistance to representatives of prospective industries wishing to relocate in areas best suited to their needs, facilitating meetings and events, produce presentation materials, written and orally.

The Sports Authority Program collaborates with community stakeholders to respond to growth, change or development, is responsible for executing Sports Authority administration and managing projects. Establishes and maintains client relations, community relations, and stakeholder engagement, and establishes and implements technical assistance tools and resources that aid statewide community actionable plans to facilitate such needs.

Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is usually performed in an office setting, with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computer, tablet, printer, calculator, cellphone, copy machine, scanner, keyboard, and telephone usage. Occasional travel, working extra hours, working on weekends and holidays.
