From $35,000 a year

Music Director and Organist

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek is searching for a Music Director and Organist to lead the music ministry of the congregation. Music is essential to the worship and community life at St. Paul’s. It binds us together and reflects our diverse experiences of God and each other.

We take joy in having a liturgy with a range of sacred musical offerings, from classical to contemporary repertoire. We sing chants from the Anglican, Taizé and Gregorian traditions, and hymns from the Anglican tradition and beyond. We celebrate our musical inheritance from the past, and we delight in exploring new music that may nurture those who are yet to join us.

Skills required for the job:

  • Be a competent organist, strong pianist and gifted accompanist and director
  • Be highly proficient in reading music and writing musical notation for ensemble and solo adaptations
  • Feel inspired and passionate about invigorating and growing a church music program
  • Bring experience managing a music program at a liturgical church, and understand the role of music in the Episcopal liturgical calendar and lectionary
  • Have demonstrated people skills, and be able to work comfortably with a wide range of musical styles and musicians with a range of abilities
  • Guide musicians and others in their Christian faith through worshipful ministry and shared prayer life
  • Provide a creative environment that encourages participation and builds up both musicians and the program
  • Appreciate working on a team and value collaboration, finding flexibility and good humor with staff and volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned, in particular around principal feast days and special events (weddings, funerals, etc.)

Additional Information
The average weekly time commitment for this position is 19 hours: to be spent practicing and preparing for rehearsals, leading musical worship at the main Sunday service (9:30 am) and once a month at the early service (7:30 am), and developing additional programs in collaboration with staff, volunteers, and/or other Episcopal parishes in the Diocese of
California. Compensation starts at $35,000 annually, dependent on experience; it is an exempt position with prorated vacation accrual, and reports to the Rector.

St. Paul’s is gifted with two pipe organs, a Schlicker which was rebuilt in 2000 in the main sanctuary, and a Harrison and Harrison in our historic chapel. We also have a Baldwin grand piano that was refurbished in 2019.
