Job Responsibilities

The Museum Director ensures the smooth operation of the Fort Museum including Sutler Shop and Parking Program as well as work with the French & Indian War Society at Lake George. This position requires confidentiality, leadership, ability to meet deadlines, networking with other sites and future planning. A love of history is desired with operations experience to move this significant location forward for year round profitable operation.

Answers questions and/or refers to appropriate FWH department.

Takes steps to resolve problems and/or refers issue to appropriate department.

Work with outside organizations as we push our history through marketing and relationship building.

General Job Duties

Oversight of operation of Fort, parking operations across property and Sutler Shop.

Create a memorable customer experience through accurate history in exhibits, programs, public engagement opportunities, displays and modern technology.

Works closely with CEO to create budgets for operations and programs for the fiscal year and future including the tracking of daily sales by type of admission.

Develops reporting for sales and expenses to keep CEO and President current on museum/retail status.

Determines capital projects and repair & continuing maintenance needs, works with Maintenance Director on pricing options and requests funding.

Look for ways to increase sales while keeping expenses under control and within the desired budget.

Keep current with trends in the museum, hospitality, marketing, and retail industries to better position the Fort for growth.

Oversee Merchandising staff at Sutler and retail staff to meet budgets and guest satisfaction.

Updates displays and programming at Fort including protection of the Fort’s artifacts, improvement of the customer experience and support of the French & Indian War Society at Lake George’s efforts to fulfill their educational mission. Develop new ways to reach a changing demographic.

Network with other historical sites to develop opportunities to increase visitors and joint programming at each site.

Complete the opening of the Research Center.

Complete the implementation planned exhibit and marketing goals (Augmented reality and Adirondack Studio 5 year plan).

Ensures that all staff are properly trained, and staffing levels are adequate for all programming offered. The safety of staff, guests and company assets are critical requirements.

Conduct regular staff meetings to inform and train all staff on the FWH property and their work areas as well as gather ideas and comments from staff for improving the product. During the busy season strive for weekly meetings.
