Northern Star (Pogo) LLC has a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Mine Planning Engineer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a 15 days on, 13 days off, rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

The Mining Engineer Planning reports to the Senior Mining Engineer Planning, and the primary role is for the safe design and implementation of Mine plans and systems as well as other engineering requirements within the Technical Service Team.

The primary focus of the engineering team is to safely and efficiently deliver the designs, plans and expertise to successfully extract the world class ore body we enjoy here at Pogo, while at the same time developing the skills to set themselves up for future leadership and management roles.

The Pogo engineering team are a dynamic and adaptable group of engineers with varying experience and specializations. Working within the technical team at Pogo presents our engineers with the opportunities to develop highly sought-after skills in production, planning, scheduling and project management.

Duties include:

  • Develop, communicate, and implement underground mine designs, plans and schedules for Pogo Mine consistent with safe practices, government regulations, and production targets.
  • Generating and implementing Operating Development and Long Hole Open Stope designs
  • Generating and justifying Capital Development including Ramps, and other Capital Infrastructure designs
  • Involvement in Ore Reserves Estimation and Life of Mine Planning
  • Presenting weekly production schedules to mine operations and geology departments
  • Planning and establishing primary and secondary mine ventilation networks, escapeway systems, backfill reticulation, electrical reticulation, and ground control and support designs
  • Performing financial evaluations and cost analyses for operating and capital project justification
  • Identifying, communicating, and assisting to resolve safety hazards
  • Performing other duties and projects as assigned

The specifics:

  • Tertiary qualification in Mine Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years underground mining experience
  • Experience in hard rock underground mining, preferably gold
  • Experience and/or training in Deswik, or other mine design software package required.
  • Experience with Long hole open stoping and Paste Backfill is preferred
  • High level analysis and problem-solving skills and ability to provide working solutions
  • Must have good comprehension of safe operating procedures, safety rules, policies, emergency procedures, and MSHA requirements.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and adapt to changing priorities
  • Display a clear commitment to safety, health and responsible environmental management
  • Good communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must pass a post offer physical and drug test, as well as a background check.

  • A Covid Vaccine is required as a condition of employment for all employees hired on or after July 12, 2021.
    • Either one round of Pfizer or Moderna, or the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine is required prior to beginning work for Northern Star (Pogo) LLC. If Pfizer or Moderna, the second vaccine shot will then be needed as scheduled to complete the requirement.
    • Requests for exceptions to this requirement, for reasons such as a candidate's religious beliefs or disability status, will be considered on a case by case basis and determined by the general manager.

The Details:

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off rotating schedule up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
