Charter Steel has an opportunity for a Process Metallurgist role in our Cleveland Rolling Mill!
We are a growth and people focused company; this exciting role is open due to a promotion on the team.
What you'll need:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy/Materials Engineering or related degree.
  • Four plus years’ experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve issues related to production and product quality.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with various levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with multiple functions and levels within the business.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and data analysis.
  • Experience in material selection, product specifications, and failure analysis.
  • Participate and/or lead in cross functional teams and resources without direct authority; including the ability to collaborate and influence others to find the optimal solution.
  • Experience in Continuous Improvement of operations through equipment design and modification.
  • Experience in programming and performing queries in various computer applications.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software products.
What we'd prefer:
  • Six plus years’ experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong ferrous metallurgy and steel manufacturing knowledge, including use of metallurgical lab equipment.
  • Experience with ISO/Quality System Requirements - Business specific, please update at time of posting.
  • Skilled in leading and facilitating problem solving teams.
  • Thorough knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and data analysis.
  • Proved leadership skills in leading cross functional teams and resources without direct authority; including the ability to collaborate and influence others to find the optimal solution.
What you'll do:
  • Perform feasibility evaluations of potential new steel grades and modifications to existing grades.
  • Analyze the effect of process changes on product performance.
  • Coordinate internal and external laboratory analyses of samples.
  • Provide reports and recommendations based on the results.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis of process-related defects and effects on final products.
  • Recommend and implement product and/or process improvements based on detailed analysis of quality parameters data.
  • Assist Technical Services in troubleshooting and resolving customer complaints, including making customer visits as required by management and/or Technical Services Engineers.
  • Collect and communicate product quality data.
  • Act as key sales and customer contact for metallurgical support, specification review, and failure analysis.
  • Conduct customer tours based on product and process needs.
  • Populate and maintain databases for assessment of product capability analysis, specifications, supplier approvals, and deviations.
  • Develop new computer programs for improved data analysis methods.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of procedures and practices.
  • Supervise annual calibration of lab analysis equipment.
