Provides direct therapeutic treatment services to mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, intellectually disabled and substance abusing individuals. Work is performed under general supervision and is guided by agency policies and procedures, quality assurance, public and private payor guidelines, diagnostic guidelines and professional practices and including ethical standards related to client interactions, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.

• Conducts intake interviews, obtains data and develops diagnosis and treatment plans.
• Interviews individuals and provides problem solving and supportive therapy.
• Conducts group, individual and family therapy sessions.
• Prepares lesson plan and training materials for educational/treatment programming.
• Prepares correspondence, progress notes and other records on individual progress and contacts and prepares related reports and testifies in court.
• Inputs psychological data to agency staff for individual placements, care and treatment.
• Consults with agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs; makes referrals, and provides and coordinates individual case management services.
• Provides expert testimony in court and legal proceedings.

Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with mental illness and related individual, group and family therapy and counseling techniques and practices; thorough knowledge of individual management guidelines for Virginia; good knowledge of office management practices; ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with private and public agency personnel; ability to function calmly in stressful situations; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to maintain individual records. Strong communication and organizational skills. Proficiency with computer systems. Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences with professional experience in direct therapy to the mentally ill and substance abusing populations, or combination of education and experience to produce required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Licensed as LCSW, LPC, or LCP, or license eligible. Valid Virginia Driver’s License.

Work is performed in an office environment. The incumbent may be exposed to hostile and abusive clients. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant walking, moving, carrying, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.
