City of Gardiner-Public Works Mechanic
Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, place a high value on superior internal customer service, possess organizational skills, and have experience with both gas and diesel vehicles as well as heavy equipment.
  • Class B commercial driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within one (6) months of hire, is required. Tools are required.
  • The preferred candidate will have at least one year of experience in a similar work environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Duties:
  • Plans to carry out and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all City vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Tests, services, and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch-ups and related work.
  • Evaluates the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles and perform or schedule needed repairs.
  • Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair, or replacement.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
  • Purchase parts and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
  • Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Oversees maintenance performed by the public works department’s heavy equipment operators and drivers.
This is a union position (Teamsters Union Local #340) that consists of 40 hours per week with a work schedule of 4-10 hour days. Significant overtime may be required during winter snow removal operations.

Pay and Benefits:
  • The starting hourly pay rate is $20.24 to $22.35, depending on experience and qualifications.
