Position Focus:
Under the supervision of a Library Collection Services (LCS) manager, the Materials Assistant I performs a variety of tasks necessary for the efficient operation of LSF. The successful incumbent must attend assigned training in workflow ergonomics and safety practices and perform all tasks following strict safety guidelines. The successful incumbent will also be required to obtain certification in the proper use of an order picker after job training. Work will often be performed in a low temperature and low humidity environment. Cleans books, archival boxes and other library materials according to specified instructions. Checks for special preservation conditions requiring special handling. Assembles pre-fabricated cardboard trays. Sizes and places items into trays. Accessions items and performs other functions as directed using the LSF’s stand-alone inventory database. As directed and following specific protocols, prepares work orders both for items paged from LSF and for items returned to the facility for re-shelving. Shelves, retrieves and re-shelves material in high-density shelving modules by operating an order picker. Scans materials for electronic delivery. Loads and unloads trucks to ready them for daily pick-up and delivery runs. Drives vehicles of various makes/models across campus and to non-campus locations in order to pick-up and deliver materials for university patrons and staff. Lifts totes and other objects weighing up to 70 pounds, rolls book trucks/dollies on a variety of surfaces including inclines. Operates a pallet jack and a hand truck to load and unload vehicles. May perform routine maintenance on delivery vehicles and order picker, including pumping gas, checking oil, and charging & maintaining electric battery. Maintains the order and cleanliness of work area and equipment. Stationed at SML, performs receiving and in-house delivery of materials transported by library vehicles. Retrieves material from within various units within the SML/Beinecke complex and prepares outbound shipments for pick-up by YUL operated vehicles. Maintains logs and records of activities as required. Performs other duties as assigned and according to a schedule that might rotate or change to accommodate work demands or staffing variations. May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at the West Campus location in West Haven, CT.
Essential Duties
1. Fills orders from stock based on authorized requisitions. Orders, receives, stores, and issues equipment, material, merchandise, tools, or supplies. Counts, classifies or weighs articles. 2. Determines method of shipping. Checks and reports on condition of goods received or to be shipped. Reports damaged or insufficient shipments. Shelves, sorts, prices, and codes items. 3. Services customers. Provides information, receives money in payment of fees, and issues receipts. 4. Uses computer terminal to input and retrieve data. Maintains the order and security of work area, materials and equipment. May perform equipment repairs. Maintains logs and records of activities. Inventories supplies. 5. May oversee and instruct support staff. May drive vehicle for pick-up and delivery services. 6. Performs clerical functions incidental to stock activities.
Required Education and Experience
Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
A valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability to work in a warehouse or other production environment and safely operate a one-ton truck and/or automated material handling equipment.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multi-task and team environment performing rotating tasks. Strong organizational skills, customer service and interpersonal skills.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated ability to perform computer data entry.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
References must indicate excellent attendance and punctuality, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to accuracy and detail, and diligent performance.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Demonstrated ability to operate an order picker. Minimal keyboarding skills. Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, SharePoint, and Outlook.
Physical Requirements
1. Ability to lift 70 pounds and work from a platform at a height of 30 feet above ground.
2. Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb stairs, and push heavy book trucks.
3. Ability to work in a low temperature and low humidity environment.
