How You Will Contribute
Reporting to the Curator of Education, School and Teacher Programs, the Manager of School Visits is part of a team of educators dedicated to making the museum a welcoming, accessible, age-appropriate, and exciting place to learn through a variety of virtual and in-person programs designed for Pre-K through 12 grade students. The Manager collaborates with colleagues in School and Teacher Programs to vision, develop and teach virtual and in-person programs and create resources for students and teachers. They work to build and maintain relationships with teachers and schools to foster partnerships and ensure programs support and inspire student learning. The Manager oversees the day today work of student visits including supervising the student center team, school group reservations and student center activities. They work cross-departmentally to communicate school visit needs and activities and to advocate for student experience and learning..
Specifically, you will:
- Work with the School and Teacher Programs team to create and lead engaging and inspiring experiences that support and enrich K-12 student learning and deepen students’ engagement with art.
- Teach virtual and in-person student lessons 3 – 4 days a week.
- Develop new lesson offers
- Develop pre and post visit activities for lessons
- Facilitate partnership programs with schools and teachers.
- Develop and supervise the summer camp program
- Supervise and lead training for part time gallery teachers.
- Communicate with school administrators and educators to ensure school programs are vital and connected to student learning and to strategize how the Museum will most effectively work with local schools and school districts, particularly the School District of Philadelphia.
- Collaborate with the School and Teacher Programs team to develop and lead professional development workshops for PreK-12 grade teachers and develop teaching resource materials that help teachers utilize art and the museum’s collections as a resource for their classroom teaching.
- Work with the Curator of Education, School and Teacher Programs and others in School and Teacher Programs to identify and implement continuing professional development opportunities for our team.
- Oversee and lead the day-to-day operation of school visit programs including:
- Supervising the Student Center Team which currently consists of the Student Center Coordinator, Student Center Assistants, and Gallery Teachers
- School Group Reservations and Statistics
- School Group Arrival and Visit procedures
- Work cross-departmentally to advocate for and communicate school group schedules and needs throughout the museum and maintain positive working relationships.
- Promote school visit programs through the museum’s website and other media
- Collaborate with the Curator of Education, School and Teacher Programs to develop and report on yearly program offerings, budget and attendance projections for School Visits.
- Maintain a broad working knowledge of current museum education and elementary and secondary education practices, approaches and issues.
- Work with curatorial and interpretation teams to find ways to make specific exhibitions and gallery installations accessible to students and their teachers.
- Collaborate with Development on grant/funding proposals and documentation of programs and supports a variety of fundraising efforts.
- Attend weekly School and Teacher Programs team meetings and Division of Education meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Your background and experience include:
- Experience teaching a variety of grade levels of students in a museum, classroom or other arts organizations using object-based and inquiry-based teaching approaches.
- Experience developing K -12 curriculum in a museum or classroom setting.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of people, including K-12 students and their teachers, school administrators, and many other museum staff.
- Excellent written, and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- Ability to direct the work of others, provide creative and intellectual oversight to a team
- Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting, contributing to, and supporting an equitable and inclusive culture (DEAI)
- Demonstrated planning and organizational skills. Ability to establish goals, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
- Demonstrated problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment, and decision-making skills.
- Experience developing budget goals.
- Background knowledge of art education, art history, primary and secondary education or other related fields.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
Position and Compensation Details
- The salary for this position is $56,000
- This position is full-time, exempt, and 35 hours per week.
- The schedule for this position is generally Monday - Friday, though participation in some weekend and evening programs is expected.
- This position reports to the Curator of Education, School and Teacher Programs
- Physical requirements:
- Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
- Able to regularly set up, adjust, and operate a computer/keyboard and other office equipment used to generate work/transmit data.
- Able to lead tour groups throughout various gallery spaces.
- Able to move items up to 30 pounds.
- COVID-19 vaccination required.
- Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
- PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting required.
