Distinguishing Characteristics
Service Maintenance Trainee is the entry and training level classification of the service field operations series. Under supervision and in a training capacity, incumbents are assigned routine, semiskilled maintenance tasks while learning the broad range of duties in the construction and maintenance trades as necessary for the Streets and Traffic Maintenance division of the Public Works Department. Incumbents generally work as a member of a crew, but may be given independent assignments. This class is alternately staffed with the Service Maintenance Worker, and incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience, and demonstrating proficiency that meet the qualifications for the higher-level classification.
Service Maintenance Worker is the fully trained working-level classification in the service field operations series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform a broad range of duties in the basic construction and maintenance trades as necessary. Incumbents generally work as a member of a crew, but may be given independent assignments and may, under direction, lead a small crew of Maintenance Workers/Trainees or temporary workers and assist with training. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Service Maintenance Worker in that the latter classification is responsible for technical and functional direction over an assigned crew and performs tasks which require the application of a more advanced skill or specialized knowledge of the techniques and tools used in service maintenance or which require the regular use of specialized equipment.
