Overview

May work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, charts and verbal instructions to program, set up and operate various machine tools, work cells, and/or CNC work centers to fabricate a wide array of component parts (standard, special, sample.) of above average to complex variety. Performs advanced setup operations, adjusts and checks out programming and operates numerically controlled machine tools to perform a complex series of progressive machining operations. Broad knowledge of machining techniques and/or programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work from blueprints, samples, work orders and instructions:
  • Perform detailed analysis of the component parts configuration/dimensions to determine the most efficient machining operations required for production.
  • Determine work center to be utilized and operating sequences in order to machine component parts, which are of above average to complex configurations.
  • Calculate and write programs for CNC work centers, to fabricate component parts to stated engineering specifications.
  • Insert computer programs into CNC work centers, set and adjust machine speeds and feeds, modify programs and document changes as required.
  • Works independently to troubleshoot and resolve problems concerning machining operations, tools, materials, and CNC programs.
  • Install and adjust tooling into all work centers.
  • Process first piece through initial run, analyzing and making critical adjustments to tooling, programs, and process parameters of work center.
  • Operate and monitor work centers to perform progressive turning, boring, drilling, tapping and reaming operations which are above average complexity to produce stated quantities of component parts for production runs.
  • Monitor ongoing operation through machine cycle, load and unload work centers as necessary.
  • Perform secondary machining operations on component parts as required.
  • Pull the required tooling and raw materials for the machining of modified component parts.
  • Fabricate simple holding fixtures as required for machining operations.
  • Inspect parts for stated dimensions and surface imperfections for production runs.
  • Modify cutting tools as necessary.
  • Prepare the required paperwork and place completed work in a designated location.
  • Works with engineering and supervisory personnel to troubleshoot and resolve design, equipment and operating difficulties.
  • Perform preventative maintenance duties as scheduled by maintenance department.
  • Assist training of lower level machinists, answering work questions, resolving operating difficulties, and reviewing completed work assignments.
  • Will be required to successfully complete 30/60/90 Day Evaluation / Orientation Program.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years CNC experience and/or 10 years machining experience and able to perform all task outlined on the Machinist IV Technical Training Guide (TG-Machinist 4).
  • The minimum years of experience requirement may be waived for a potential candidate if they can demonstrate competency by:
  • Satisfactorily completing the practical skill assessment in the time it would take an average Machinist IV.
  • Currently possessing and/or demonstrating the ability to satisfactorily perform all tasks outlined on the Machinist IV Technical Training Guide (TG-machinist 4).
  • Broad knowledge of machining techniques to performs advanced setup operations.
  • Works independently to troubleshoot and resolve problems concerning machining operations, tools and CNC Programs.
  • Proficient in the use of cuttings tools & measuring equipment
  • Read & understand blueprint drawings.
  • Experience training lower level machinists

  • Individual must be passionate about CNC machining while an effective problem solver who is able to work in fast paced environment. Must have the ability to change and organize priorities as workload dictates. Will know how to balance multiple priorities and work toward objectives without losing sight of details.
