Lower School Teacher (Kindergarten) Job at The Principia
Department/Location: Lower School Faculty (Kindergarten), St. Louis
Organizational Relationship: Reports to Lower School Principal
Summary: Principia is seeking an experienced Kindergarten teacher who plans and teaches reading, writing, word study, mathematics, science, and social studies lessons within a learning environment that follows a workshop approach. Utilizes inquiry-based and project-based learning to create relevant and engaging learning which teaches for deep understanding and transfer of knowledge. Full-time, school-year position.
Work Performed: Essential Duties*

Displays a strong interest and love for working with Kindergarten students

Plans and delivers engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in accordance with Principia’s curriculum; differentiates instruction

Effectively integrates 21st-century skills into the classroom helping students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills

Uses formative and summative assessments to effectively inform instruction

Demonstrates ability to use a variety of technology tools to enhance curriculum and student learning (e.g. iPad, interactive display tv, various apps, etc.)

Understands the importance of DEI and creates a classroom environment which reflects those values

Effectively works with a wide range of students – helping them feel successful and to understand their unlimited potential

Handles discipline situations in an effective manner that supports character growth

Pursues professional development and looks to apply best practices in the classroom; becomes part of a professional learning community where teachers are continually improving teaching and learning

Actively participates in school-wide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and parent meetings

Actively collaborates with colleagues across levels and departments to support the implementation of school-wide initiatives

Supports Lower School activities and chaperones field trips

Displays a love for working with Kindergarten students; understands how to establish and maintain student respect and rapport.

Participates in yearly goal-setting and frequent one-on-one meetings with supervisor.

Reflects on teaching and learning regularly and improves practice.

Completes the required portfolio, including walkthroughs, school visits, reflections, and goal-setting.

Recognizes that spiritually-based character education is as important as the subject matter being taught

Minimum Qualifications:
- Active (or pending) membership in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and/or a Journal-listed branch church or society; if not a member, then aligns with Principia’s values. Those who are not members of a Christian Science church are currently referred to as Visiting Professionals, though the position is still a full-time, school-year position; not temporary.
- Christian Science class instruction preferred but not required
- Bachelor’s degree in education (elementary degree/certification preferred); Master’s degree preferred (in Education or a related field)
- Demonstrate support of Principia’s mission and philosophy by promoting a positive image of the school at all times
