Job title: Soils Production Laboratory Technician

(Grinding, Panning, Saturated Soils, SAR, TEC, Bicarbonate Extractions and Sample disposal and incineration.)

Reporting to: Soils Laboratory Manager

Wages: Range $16-$18 per hour; Non-exempt

Hours: 40 hours per week

Purpose of the position/pod
A Soils Production Laboratory Technician will be responsible for (Grinding, Panning, Saturated Soils, SAR, TEC, Bicarbonate Extractions and Sample disposal and incineration.)

When grinding technicians will be responsible for grinding all incoming soil samples, incinerating quarantined soils, unpacking samples and all other duties assigned.

When panning the technician will be responsible for the daily quality control samples, scheduling of soil samples, unpacking samples, grinding and all other duties assigned.

When performing saturated soils, the technician will be responsible for the daily quality control samples, analysis of saturated soil samples, unpacking samples, grinding and all other duties assigned.
Key responsibilities & duties Incinerate quarantine soils and maintain the log of samples disposed.

  • Practice safe laboratory practices and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Grind incoming samples once dried to <2mm.
  • Completing assignments given by the manager accurately and efficiently.
  • Unpack samples when they are received and help others as time allows.
  • Acquire and maintain a reasonable understanding of workplace policies and procedures located in the Employee Handbook as well as Safety Plan.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment to help minimize equipment down time.
  • Inform manager of areas that needs more efficiencies or new equipment.
  • Any duty or activity management deems necessary.
  • Set up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for testing.
  • Test and analyze soils to determine chemical content and other characteristics.
  • Document results of tests and analyses.
  • Prepare chemical solutions for use in extracting and analysis of soils using standard operating procedures.
  • Record and analyze QC data so results are reported with the highest quality standards.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
