Job Purpose and Objectives
Provide a safe environment for the youth to learn socially acceptable behaviors. This is done through supervision of the youth and teaching new ways of dealing with situations and people. Provide physical, medical and emotional care to the youth while they are in the facility. Responsibilities will include maintaining proper supervision, interpersonal relations, and security.
Job Competencies
Ensure facility security and the safety of all youth and staff by strictly following all security policies and procedures and by always remaining alert and aware of the detention environment. Monitor, document, and properly communicate the observed physical and mental health of the detention youth. Supervise all of the youths" activities and manage youth behaviors by using the facility"s behavior management program. Accurately complete all required and necessary records with legible handwriting, proper sentence structure, and correct spelling. Safely escort and transport, via facility vehicle, youth to and from court hearings and appointments. Be a positive role model for the youth by always demonstrating appropriate behaviors both on and off duty. Communicate and work as a team in a professional, respectful, positive and constructive manner. Consistently demonstrate regular attendance and good punctuality. Assist with facility maintenance and housekeeping. De-escalate out of control youth and physically restrain youth when necessary, respond to crisis and emergency situations. Work overtime hours when requested. Attend training as scheduled. Back up shelter employees during crisis situations and participate in emergency drills. Observe and monitor youth in lockdown or disciplinary isolation. Teach and assist health and hygiene skills to youth and assist in delousing; Administer first-aid as needed. Dictate and write incident reports and placement summaries. Supervise and assist youth on daily chores. Supervise in-house visitation. Monitor use of razors and other sharp objects. Assist with school and classroom activities and help youth with homework. Inventory and document youth property. Communicate with family members to apprise them of situations with youth. Assist in training fellow staff members. Make and monitor phone calls for youth. Collect urine specimens and conduct drug screens or other tests. Calculate youth checkbook sheets to ensure accuracy. Properly handle and dispose of bio-hazardous materials. Assist in meal preparation and kitchen clean up. Act as a liaison between social workers, schools, law enforcement, and other professionals. Complete filing for youth files and copy forms as needed. Provide secure supervision to hospitalized detainees. Testify in court as requested. Assist in pursuing and detaining escapees. Conduct facility tours as requested. Protects and maintains any confidential information you have access to, whether oral, written, or electronic. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Position Requirements - High school diploma or G.E.D., plus three (3) semester hours of college level study in adolescent development, psychology, or a related field or forty-five (45) hours in documented training in child care or child development or One (1) year of experience as a youth care worker or house parent in a facility serving youth of the same age. Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all certification requirements relative to the position. Must be no less than 21 years of age and be able to meet, with or without reasonable accommodation, the physical requirements associated with the essential functions of this position Skills / Knowledge / Abilities - Experience in working with adolescents in a treatment or residential setting preferred. Training provided after hiring includes: CPR, first aid, behavior management, managing aggressive behavior, suicide prevention and training on specific job duties. Good organizational skills as well good verbal and written communication skills. Good social skills and ability to be seen as a good role-model. Basic skills or ability to learn: computer, typing, filing, telephone, and general office equipment. Good interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work cohesively as a team. Ability to follow regulations. Ability to remain calm in crisis situations. Ability to deal effectively with people and learn the facility"s behavior management system. Ability to do more than one task at a time. Consistently demonstrate the ability to exercise self-motivation.
