Junior Engineer - Under general supervision, performs routine professional field and office engineering work to assist in the management and administration of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic engineering, and infrastructure construction and maintenance projects; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development; provides professional staff assistance to higher-level engineering staff; and performs related work as assigned.
Assistant Engineer/Associate Civil Engineer - Under general supervision or general direction, performs various professional field and office engineering work related to the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic engineering, infrastructure, and daily departmental operations; provides project management and administration; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development; administers professional services and construction contracts; administers Federal and State grant funds associated with construction projects; provides professional staff assistance to the Assistant Director of Development Services/City Engineer, other departments, and the public in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports; and performs related duties, as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Senior Civil Engineer - Under general direction, plans, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of professional engineering staff within the City’s Engineering division; serves as project manager for complex professional engineering activities including environmental program planning and compliance, design, construction, land development engineering, traffic engineering, and other programs; ensures that functions meet all applicable laws, regulations, and City policies related to the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic and transportation, and infrastructure; provides complex staff assistance to departmental management staff in areas of expertise; performs and takes lead role in coordinating assignments involving a highly-developed area of expertise within the CIP; and performs related work as required.
- Junior Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field. Possession of a valid certification as an Engineer-In-Training issued by the State of California is desirable.
- Assistant Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a closely related engineering field. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience performed in a learning or training capacity at a level equivalent to the class of Junior Engineer with the City of Tracy. Possession of a valid certification as an Engineer-In-Training issued by the State of California is highly desirable.
- Associate Civil Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a closely related engineering field. Two (2) years of responsible professional engineering experience equivalent to Assistant Engineer with the City of Tracy. Possession of valid registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of California.
- Senior Civil Engineer: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a related engineering field and two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience equivalent to an Associate Engineer with the City of Tracy. Possession of a valid registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of California.
Requirement at all levels:
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license upon appointment.
- May be required to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training.

Dental and Vision Plans - Choice of Delta Dental or Bright Now Dental plans available. VSP is available as a Vision plan.
Life Insurance and Long Term Disability - Individual coverage of $50,000 is fully paid by the City. Supplemental life insurance may be purchased by the employee at the same premium rate paid by the City.
Retirement Program - CalPERS (formula dependent upon hire date and membership status in CalPERS). Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation programs available (MissionSquare & AIG/VALIC). The City participates in Social Security.
Paid Leave and Holidays - General vacation accrues at the rate of 96 hours per year the first year and progresses up to 192 hours per year at 16 years of service. Management leave is accrued at 104 hours per year. Maximum accumulation of vacation, management leave, and floating holidays shall be 488 hours. Sick leave is accrued at a rate of 96 hours per year with unlimited accrual. There are 14 paid holidays per year (includes 2 floating holidays).
Management Benefit - Fixed allowance of $960 per year to be used at employee's discretion for job related expenses.
Dependent Care and Medical Spending Accounts - (IRS Section 125): Available to eligible employees on a voluntary basis.
