We are proactively recruiting for an In Vitro Toxicologist to join our Biological Sciences Insights group in Richmond, VA, or we are open to remote work arrangements.

The selected candidate will apply their scientific expertise in nonclinical in vitro toxicology to support the development and marketing of company’s portfolio of reduced-risk tobacco and nicotine products.

What you will be doing:

  • Subject Matter Expert in nonclinical toxicology – especially cell-based in vitro studies, providing scientific recommendations on regulatory and mechanistic toxicology testing as part of toxicological risk assessment for potential reduced-risk (RR) tobacco products.
  • Identify gaps and support the development of nonclinical toxicology capability with external testing partners. Design studies, using both the standardized (e.g., OECD) and novel New Alternative Methods (NAMs) testing tools.
  • Work with diverse test materials, ranging from, e.g., individual chemicals and mixtures, inhalable and oral tobacco and nicotine products.
  • Study Sponsor on externally executed toxicology (in vitro) studies. Design, monitor, interpret, and report for internal communication and regulatory submission.
  • Identify and qualify external CROs for regulatory and foundational in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity studies. Scope and manage project to proactively meet timeline and budget, as well as to ensure Quality and Data Integrity in GLP and non-GLP studies
  • Occasional travel (10-20%) to CROs, such as for lab selection, inspection, or study monitoring.
  • Proactively engage with external scientific communities; represent the Company via external presentations and peer-review publications
  • Monitor and keep abreast of toxicology-related fields in the next generation Tox21 testing

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree required with 5+ years of experiences in Toxicology or related field. Advanced degree or DABT is a plus.
  • Experience (e.g., study director, study monitor, or principal investigator) in conducting nonclinical in vitro (regulatory and mechanistic) studies using various test systems (e.g., primary cells, 3D organotypic tissues) and exposure regimens (e.g., air-liquid-interface exposure for in vitro inhalation).
  • Proven records of interpreting mechanistic toxicology endpoints (e.g., systems toxicology, high-content screening assays of inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA damage). Experiences in the in vitro-based hazard and risk assessment in lieu of traditional (in vivo-based) toxicity testing is desired.
  • Hands-on experiences in toxicity and analytical testing of tobacco products (e.g., cigarette, tobacco-heat-products, smokeless tobacco products, or oral nicotine pouches) is a plus.
  • Excellent project management skill, attention to details, and analytical reasoning skills. Effective communication in written and spoken to diverse audience (technical and non-technical) is a must.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and multi-task in a fast-paced environment; A strong team player with effective interpersonal skills; proactively seek and implement feedbacks.
