The beautiful tree-lined City of New Carrollton is a residential community located in suburban Prince George's County, approximately eight miles from Washington, D.C. New Carrollton has a diverse population of over 12,500 residents.

The City of New Carrollton is seeking a full-time Grounds Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works Department. This position is under the direct supervision of the Horticulturist. Work assignments for this position are performed primarily outdoors within the City limits. The employee will be exposed to loud noise, machinery with moving parts, dirt, dust, debris, chemicals, and foul odors. Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.

TYPICAL TASKS

• Maintains playgrounds, parks, fields, and other City grounds.
• Operates equipment such as walk-behinds, mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, blowers, trimmers, chippers, post-hole diggers, and other equipment on flat or uneven terrains.
• Participates in the mowing, seeding, sowing, fertilizing, spreading, and grading of turf.
• Cuts brush and weeds alongside highways and right of way.
• Assists in the planting and pruning of flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes, and hedges.
• Participates in loading, unloading, and setup of playground equipment, supplies, and/or materials.
• Performs minor construction and repairs on park equipment.
• Participates in seasonal leaf collection and snow removal.
• Removes debris and litter from alongside the creek.
• Substitutes as a Sanitation Collector when needed.
• Practices safe and efficient work ethics; wears safety vest, gloves, and glasses when exiting the vehicle to remove curbside greenery.
• Assists other departments when needed.
• Performs related work as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Six (6) months of experience working in sanitation or a closely related field is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform heavy work that involves constantly lifting and carrying 50 to 75 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
