SMPO began its development history in 1984 working for investors and joint venture partners focusing on U S Postal development. In the early 1990's, we diversified with General Services Administration (GSA) projects. By 2000, we had established relationships with various credit tenant firms for build-to-suit projects across the Nation. SMPO has grown and diversified its core business into operating companies focused on government leased real estate and national credit tenant development, management, sales, and a QSR franchise.

What we are looking for…
The position of General Counsel is responsible for the management and coordination with outside counsel of all legal matters and for leading our internal risk management departments. The General Counsel will primarily be responsible to examine, review, and draft business agreements and contracts with customers, vendors, and other outside parties, providing strategic legal guidance to the executive team on a comprehensive range of legal and related issues associated with the operation of our business, negotiating leases and lease renewals, litigation claims management, insurance matters, franchise agreements, and employee relations. The position of General Counsel ensures legal compliance regarding federal and state contracting, support mergers and acquisitions activity as necessary, employee safety programs, corporate governance, and establish the prudence of defending and prosecuting lawsuits in coordination with outside counsel.

What you’ll do…

  • Providing accurate, relevant, and timely advice to the executive team and other business members team on a wide range of legal issues across multiple states and at the federal level.
  • Managing and mitigating legal risks and ensuring compliance with all laws by designing and implementing company policies and procedures.
  • Communicating with and managing outside counsel as needed.
  • In-house review for all corporate service contracts.
  • Negotiates contracts (e.g., purchases, sales, leases, etc.) with external parties (e.g., attorneys, business representatives, real estate brokers, etc.)
  • Manage dispute resolution proceedings in-house and with outside counsel.
  • Responsible for drafting leases and negotiating lease renewals.
  • Advise the Property Management Team on real property issues involving commercial leases and company-owned properties for a wide variety of real estate matters.

About You…
The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school and be licensed in Tennessee, as well as a minimum of two to five years’ experience with relevant real estate law, including reviewing, drafting, and negotiating real estate transactions and related contracts. Detail-oriented with the ability to effectively manage real estate transactions from contract to post-close.

  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with supervisors, peers, and external company contacts
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet applications
  • Authentic communicator and collaborative relationship builder
  • Meticulous attention to detail and passion for excellence, but also adaptable to change and committed to process improvement

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $84,000.00 per year
