SALARY: $74,049.00 per year or dependent on contract language. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the IAFF collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

C.P.A.T. CERTIFICATION:
Applicants must furnish a copy of their valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (C.P.A.T.) certification at the time of application and time of job offer with a date no more than one year old.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position performs hazardous tasks under emergency conditions, which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke, heat, and confined spaces; provides emergency medical assistance; performs rescue operations; may be assigned to the operation of motor equipment; acquires a knowledge of the operation of all of the various types of apparatus, tools and equipment in use by the Fire Department; observe and study the principles of fire behavior and firefighting operations, rescue work, hazardous materials, basic and advanced life support, and fire prevention and education; perform routine duties in a fire station in cleaning, maintenance, and repair of property and equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Technical Rescue Awareness certification must be completed within a period of twelve months. Fire Service Vehicle Operator certification and Fire Apparatus Engineer certification must be completed within a period of thirty-six months. Firefighter III/Advanced Technician Firefighter and Rope Operations certification must be attained within a period of sixty months. At the discretion of the Chief of the Fire Department, dependent upon Department needs, an individual shall be required to be a certified Paramedic in the State of Illinois, even after probationary period has expired. Each Firefighter shall have two opportunities to achieve certification as a Paramedic. If after two attempts certification is not achieved, termination will result in accordance with Fire Department rules and regulations for dismissal of employees. Possession of a non-CDL class B driver’s license or equivalent. Proficiency with current computer software systems, including email, calendar programs, job specific software, and customer service systems preferred or within the first six months of employment.
Considerable knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the community. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to acquire elementary knowledge of hazardous chemicals, liquids, and gases as well as the combustion properties of materials. Ability to develop skill in firefighting and in the use of firefighting and rescue equipment. Ability to act calmly and quickly in an appropriate manner in an emergency. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, employees and the public. Good health and sufficient physical strength to perform arduous tasks.
