SUMMARY

Performs work in the maintenance and repair of fire rescue apparatus, and all other associated equipment.
This position may require you to have a take-home vehicle for purposes of responding to departmental emergency situations. An employee is covered under the County’s auto insurance policy when operating the vehicle in the scope of his or her employment. Employees are encouraged to purchase a rider of endorsement to their personal automobile policy to provide coverage for operating a County vehicle for personal use including driving to and from work.

In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES / KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AMD ABILITIES

Diagnoses and repairs all types of fire rescue equipment and apparatus, including, but not limited to: engines, pumps, electrical systems and hydraulic systems. Routinely handles employee complaints or concerns about emergency vehicles.

Repairs include but are not limited to: brake systems, drive trains, transmissions, steering systems, small engines, portable pumps, generators, various types of valves and valve control assembly for fire pumps and hydraulic aerial operation systems.

Knowledge of internal combustion engines and their operation within safe limits.

Diagnostic skills in trouble shooting: engine, pump, brake and hydraulic problems.

Knowledge of occupational safety requirements.

Knowledge and use of welding equipment, gas and electric.

Ability to read and follow maintenance and repair manuals and simple electrical schematics.

Ability to communicate with people calmly and efficiently.

Ability to work as part of a team.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to work effectively in a para-military environment, including the ability to receive and follow directives and the ability to ensure directives are carried out accordingly.

Must be able to respond 24 hours a day to deal with mechanical problems or needs related to emergency response units.

Must be able to work 24 hours a day with appropriate rest periods during times of disaster or Emergency Operations Center activation.

Must be able to operate a forklift and comply with all safety rules set forth by the Department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and must possess one (1) year of considerable certifiable work experience in heavy equipment mechanic repair.
Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: *
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License

Must posses forklift certification within six (6) months from date of hire.

Must possess Fire Engineer Hydraulic Certification and be Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified in medium duty trucks.

Possession of Master A.S.E Certification preferred.
