Job Description
Felton’s Family Developmental Center offers integrated family support and mental health services to diverse families in our early care and education settings in San Francisco. Additionally, we provide comprehensive, two generation, holistic, wrap-around services to families with young children (0-5 years old) who have experienced trauma. Felton is seeking a bicultural, bilingual mental health professional, who is enthusiastic, talented and has experience working with the multicultural communities. The position requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience in health and social service fields, knowledge of child development, ability to bridge and build relationships, and experience with or interest in providing Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP).
The primary goal is to support and strengthen the relationship between a young child and his or her parent (or caregiver) as a vehicle for restoring the child's sense of safety, attachment, and appropriate effect and improving the child's cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. We accomplish this through client-centered, nonjudgmental, culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
The Child and Family Therapist will provide on-site individual trauma recovery and family crisis intervention to program participants. Responsibilities include intake, assessment, and treatment plan development. In this role the Counselor will provide psycho-education, case management, and advocacy services within a multi-disciplinary team - and as part of the treatment plan to children and parents.
The Child and Family Therapist job description is based upon the CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid, using the tiered pyramid to describe the various tasks of the Counselor and how the incumbent will meet the needs of all families on site at FDC.

Job Description
The Child and Family Therapist will play a key role in the creation of a new Infant Mental Health Program at Felton. This clinician will participate in an 18 month PAID Trainingship with UCSF's Child Trauma Research Project on the Child-Parent Psychotherapy Model.

- Comply with all legal and ethical requirements set forth by the Board of Behavioral Science and with the policies of the San Francisco Behavioral Health Department
- Maintain client records, including all mandated agency forms in accordance agency policy, state
- Confidentiality and HIPPA laws. Keep all records and information confidential. Maintain confidentiality regarding privileged administrative and client information in a professional manner.
- Keep case load as required and ensures case documentation is up-to-date and reflective of services provided.
- Meet all deadlines and comply with agency requirements around the documentation of your work
- Report suspected child and adult abuse and follow up on all such reports.
- Individual and Group weekly supervision and as well as attending necessary staff meetings and trainings
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
30% Tier One Activities: Targeting all children at FDC
- Acknowledging the importance of partnering with families, other providers, and community resources to model positive interactions and collaborative relationships for families
- Understanding and utilizing a strengths-based approach toward families
- Developing cultural humility and sensitivity to bias, including an understanding of historical trauma, systemic racism, culture of poverty, and epigenetics
- Understanding the role of Protective Factors for prevention and for building strong families
- Addressing families with sensitivity to minimize harm and to support healing, utilizing knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences and acknowledging the need for trauma informed approaches
- Empowering families by helping them develop the skills and connections to advocate for themselves, and support families in learning to use limited resources most efficiently
- Recognizing and addressing systemic barriers to accessing resources
- Implementation across Preschool classrooms at FDC of the Kimochis Social Emotional
- Curriculum including: learning and becoming an expert on this curriculum, training teachers on the Kimochis curriculum and ensuring continued fidelity to the curriculum
- Facilitation and Participation in Reflective Collaboration Meetings across all 10 classrooms at FDC to participate in the discussion of children with exceptional needs in those classrooms and supporting the needs of teachers
30% Tier Two Activities: Targeting children with behavioral and social challenges
- Performs individual observations, developmental assessments of children as assigned.
- Makes appropriate follow-up recommendations
- Engage in social emotional and self-regulation support through individualization, adapting curricula, intensive intervention, behavioral intervention
- Collaborate closely with school staff; make referrals to other community and mental health agencies when indicated; make referrals to other community and mental health agencies when needed
- Working closely with families in need of additional support to ensure children get referred to the resources necessary to meet their needs
- Short term and targeted 1:1 support of children showing exceptional behavioral and social needs (expected caseload of 5 children at a time for 6-12 week intervention strategies)
30% Tier Three Activities: Targeting children with trauma or ongoing severe emotional, social and mental health needs
- Perform crisis intervention activities as necessary
- Assist with consultation on issues related to Child Protective Services
- Provide school and home-based weekly Child-Parent Psychotherapy to a caseload of 5-10 children and families at FDC.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of San Francisco County Community Mental Health Services, paperwork and community resources preferred
- Minimum of two years of experience in early childhood mental health or early childhood education
- Knowledge of individual/family dynamics
- Knowledge of child & adolescent growth and development, youth development and leadership principals
- Knowledge and training of the Teaching Pyramid
- Knowledge and familiarity with multi-cultural populations, especially African-American, Asian and Latino
- Committed to culturally informed practice and a multicultural learning environment
- Knowledge of and ability to work in a community and agency structure
- Open to learning and implementing Evidenced Based Practices
- Ability to perform clear, concise and timely documentation
- Ability to carry out community assignments including those connected to the school sites
- Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking and written form so that others can clearly understand
- Ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong and to problem solve effectively
- Ability to be a team player with a welcoming attitude
- Must be available to work one evening per week as needed
Education, certification, and licenses
- Master's degree master’s degree in Social Work/Psychology/Counseling
- Must be CA Licensed or license eligible (registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences or Board of Psychology)
- Must pass and maintain annual Tuberculosis Test
- Must pass Department of Justice Fingerprint screening
