The Dorchester County Board of Education is currently accepting applications for an Elementary Special Education Coordinator. Working under the direction of the Supervisor of Special Education, this position supports the educational development of students with disabilities. This position is located at the Central Office. The successful candidate will demonstrate principled leadership and decision making while assuming a leadership role that reflects the outcomes outlined in the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework. ***This position is funded by a grant.***


DUTIES
:

  • Ensures adherence to federal and state regulations regarding the provision of services to students with disabilities.
  • Develops procedures and criteria for special education programs.
  • Monitors student eligibility for special education programs.
  • Coordinates and monitors procedures for referral, evaluation, placement and monitoring of students regarding special education programs and services.
  • Recommends policies and programs to meet the needs of exceptional children.
  • Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing special education.
  • Evaluates the special education program, curriculum, procedures, and individual students’ needs and achievements, leading program revisions as needed.
  • Assists in recruiting, screening, and recommendation for hiring of special education staff.
  • Coordinates services and programs with outside agencies as appropriate and necessary.
  • Interprets the objectives and programs of the special education services to the Board, the administration, staff, and the public at large.
  • Develops and manages departmental budget, including those with outside funding sources.
  • Plans and conducts professional development activities.
  • Supervises subordinate staff.
  • Supervises the Dorchester County Infants and Toddlers Program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has obtained, or is eligible for, a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate, required, with an endorsement in Generic Special Education.
  • Has obtained an education related master’s degree, required.
  • Has obtained, or is eligible for, an Administrator I endorsement, required.
  • Has Five (5) years successful teaching students with disabilities experience to include some experience in a leadership/administrative role.
  • Ability to develop effective work teams.
  • Familiarity with the outcomes and indicators of the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework.
  • Expertise with the Maryland State Curriculum and/or Common Core Standards in the areas supervised.
  • Proficient in the use of the Maryland Professional Development Standards; and
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.
