Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience

About the Job:
The incumbent is a highly responsible administrator with the Indiana Department of Correction. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance by the agency with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title II of the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other applicable federal and state regulations and laws pertaining to accessibility and accommodations. The incumbent shall work with Department staff and leadership to ensure a strong ADA program and program compliance. Promotes a culture that is inclusive, culturally responsive, accessible, creative, cooperative, and focused on improving ADA outcomes. Fosters a culturally responsive environment that is inclusive and accepting of all staff and incarcerated individuals to positively contribute to the agency's mission.

A Day in the Life:

  • Determines goals and objectives of Department Wide ADA policies and procedures.
  • Provides administrative direction and professional supervision of the site ADA facilitators
  • Develops, plans directs, evaluates, and standardizes policies and procedures for incarcerated individuals with ADA needs.
  • Investigates and evaluates ADA complaints made against the Department
  • Receives investigates and makes determinations accommodations on requests for accommodations with a multidisciplinary team approach including Department staff and leadership
  • Conducts regular visits to all Department facilities to ensure compliance with Title II of ADA, Section 504 of Rehabilitation Ace of 1973, and other applicable federal and state laws regarding accessibility and accommodations.
  • Designs, implements, reviews, and revises ADA procedures, policies, and training for all staff and contractors.
  • Collects and maintains a library of ADA regulations and supplementary materials.
  • Planning and coordinating overall compliance efforts.
  • Works with Department Staff and Administrative Leadership to write extended-range ADA plans and ensure plan implementation.
  • Completes all required workshops and training.
  • Develops, interprets, and reviews departmental policies/procedures that impact assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with all stakeholders.
  • Compiles prepares, analyzes, and presents research, findings, and statistical reports.
  • Network with community resources to continue to improve the level of ADA services within the IDOC.
  • Works closely with the Health Services Division to promote ADA compliance and initiatives
  • Represents the Department at professional association meetings, conferences, and media situations when requested by the Chief Legal Counsel
  • Maintains positive working relationships with all stakeholders.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public or Business Administration, Human Services, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • ADA Coordinator Training Certificate
  • 5 years of professional experience providing consultation, guidance, and training in the area of ADA compliance providing disability, accessibility accommodations services for individuals with disabilities.
  • Strong communication skills are an asset, given the need to work effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and leaders including patients, families, employees, contracted medical vendors, state agency colleagues, and other agency staff
  • Expert knowledge of state or local government’s structure, activities, and employees
  • Expert knowledge of the Federal and other laws addressing the rights of people with disabilities, such as section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 29 U.S.C. § 794, and ADA.
  • Considerable knowledge of available state/community resources
  • Above average ability to forecast problems and issues
  • Above average knowledge of the principles of strategic performance management and long-range planning
  • Expert ability to persuade and communicate complex principles
  • Demonstrated skill in program planning, management, supervision, and performance management
  • Demonstrated skill in exercising initiative and judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direct a diverse staff
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Department Staff and pertinent stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel and conduct business within facilities, including secured areas
  • Ability to testify in front of judicial/governmental hearings
  • Experience with people with a broad range of disabilities
  • Knowledge of various alternative formats and alternative technologies that enable people with disabilities to communicate, participate, and perform tasks
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and individuals with disabilities
  • Familiarity with any local disability advocacy groups
  • Skills and training in negotiation and mediation
  • Organizational and analytical skills
  • Possess positive role model traits
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to abide by the Department’s Standard of Conduct and all behavioral expectations
