Director of Buying and Merchandising

The Director of Buying & Merchandising is the strategic leader of products and manages the essential functions of sourcing, product development and management of assortments and inventory to maximize the growth of Scandinavian Designs and Dania Furniture. The Director of Buying and Merchandising is an expert in all aspects of product selection and management of assortments while being able to manage the planning and allocation of merchandise that reflects the core values of our brand. This is achieved by being proactive in finding innovative ways to develop and plan our entire assortment through expert knowledge and continuous trend research, inspirational promotional strategies, analyzing sales data, maximizing sales and profits, managing inventory and reporting to the Executive team and Ownership. The Head of Buyer & Merchandising will oversee all matters for product purchasing, vendor management and own the process from selection to shipping while providing sales and inventory forecasting, targets and detailed analysis to help drive profitability growth. This is a non-remote position and based in our Boise, ID HQ.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Manage, train and support a team that excels in product buying, merchandising, merchandise planning, allocation and vendor management that drive and enhances the business and profitability.
  • Develop and lead a team that implements strategies for assortment needs to present to leadership and managers based on business and market trends.
  • Continuously analyze product and sales performance for a variety of SKUs/categories to understand trends in the business to develop assortment additions and/or drops to maximize sales, profits and financial objectives.
    • Direct and control inventory to maximize sales and achieve inventory, turn and profitability goals.
    • Report and present projected sales in-season and build open-to-buy purchase budgets.
    • Identify and analyze key metrics regarding assortment, inventory composition, pricing and promotions and recommend introduction, correction and exit strategies proactively.
  • Establish, maintain and positively partner with vendors while:
    • Successfully negotiating buying terms on selection, price, quantity, and delivery terms.
    • Advise on minimum order terms and potential exclusivity whenever possible.
    • Leading cross functional role out of new product introductions company wide.
  • Propose and lead new product initiatives with various departments on product related education and operational matters ranging from Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Accounting, Operations, IT, eCommerce, Distribution Centers, Showrooms, Logistics, Customer Experience, Construction and the executive team on strategic imperatives for the business.
    • Collaborate with the Accounting, IT and analytics teams on financial projections and implement strategic pricing strategies.
  • Lead and recommend advertising proposals and projections for multimedia, in-store promotions and staff product education.
    • Correct customer reviews, feedback from general managers, store managers and front of house staff on matters and addresses quality issues and returns.
    • Provide direction to creative for product copy execution and outline photography to best highlight product features.
  • Lead and manage a team of buyers and planners to achieve company financial objectives as well as manage the team performance management and mentorship the professional development.
  • Perform other duties or special projects when assigned.
WHO YOU ARE
  • Strong experience with domestic and international purchasing and buying from an operational and strategic approach to strengthen and improve the business.
  • 8+ years of Buying and merchandise planning experience and/or related industry experience.
  • Have a proven analytical acumen to identify and resolve business issues specifically in merchandise forecasting and planning models, and strong technical and operational experience.
  • Experience leading the design, and building, implementation and successful rollout of new processes that positively impact organizational performance.
    • Know how to execute and have a proven track record of achieving financial objectives.
  • Passionate about furniture with an eye for spotting trends in the marketplace.
  • Excel in leading a team and with strong self-initiative, able to work independently, collaboratively with DCs and showrooms and able to meet tight deadlines.
  • Love products and trends with the ability to interpret them back into merchandising.
  • Able to attend buying trips as needed and travel to stores when required.
  • Actively work to find solutions for problems and streamline processes to optimize workflow.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to Executives and other members of the organization when needed.
  • Take ownership over all aspects of buying for products and team management.
  • High level of competence with MS Office.
  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, moderate reaching and occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Occasional overtime and weekend work and travel to other locations including domestic and international buying trips.
  • Our positions require successfully completing the pre-employment background check and signing a nondisclosure agreement.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in business, merchandising or equivalent experience preferred.
