THE CHALLENGE
Responsible for managing interests in power plant assets including power purchase contracts, commercial improvements and value-added special projects. The Director, Asset Management will be active in the commercialization of assets following power purchase contract expirations. This successful candidate will assist in the identification, planning and implementation of projects that enhance asset value that will span the range of commercial, engineering and operating solutions. Reports to the Vice President, Asset Management and Commercial Operations.
- Support the achievement of investment objectives for assigned assets or portfolios of assets.
- Participate in or lead various initiatives that either improve existing processes or add value to the investment case for assigned assets.
- Maintain relationships with commercial counterparties to protect investor’s interests in assets, quickly and efficiently resolving differences or disputes as they may arise.
- Contribute to commercial origination efforts for assigned assets that maintain or improve overall Net Asset Values for power investments.
- Coordinate with third-party marketers for periods of merchant operations to understand plant performance and evaluate marketer execution.
- Assist with operations and continual improvement efforts that result in either one-time or recurring positive cash flow through coordination with Plant Managers and plant personnel.
- Develop cost/benefit analyses for plant capital and facility proposals for improved efficiencies. Participate in the implementation of the plan.
- Perform analyses in coordination with operators and engineers to recommend work to be performed, as well as for repair, refurbish, replace, retire, or run-to-failure recommendations to management.
- Assist with engineering improvement projects that either improve plant efficiency/longevity or resolve technical plant dilemmas.
- Support regulatory or legislative solutions as part of asset optimization projects in coordination with trade groups and both in-house and outside counsel.
- Support regulatory reporting and compliance efforts, as needed.
- Assist in the diligence, acquisition and integration of new investments that the company makes.
THE PROFILE TO SUCCEED
Degree in business, engineering or related discipline preferred, or 7+ years of experience with natural gas-fired and renewable power generation assets is required. Experience with a variety of US electricity markets is required. Experience with financial tools and principles such as a cost/benefit analysis, accounting standards, budgeting and financial modeling are required. Project management experience is preferred.
- Solid understanding of fundamental power plant and renewable energy concepts and operations.
- Familiarity with various commercial structures in the power sector including power purchase agreements, tolls, various hedging structures and long/open merchant positions.
- Familiarity with project finance and capital structures with multiple underlying project financings.
- Experience building or working with various spreadsheet-based models for engineering, operating, financing or M&A purposes.
- Ability to think critically, analyze complex problems with no clear solutions, exercise good judgment, defend conclusions before senior management and make sound decisions.
- Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of competitive business practices in daily work activities and decision making.
- Ability to interact and communicate well with individuals in all areas of the Company and outside vendors.
- Competency with process improvement, relationship building, written and verbal communication, and critical thinking.
- Maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity in all dealings inside and outside the organization.
- Ability to professionally handle highly confidential and sensitive information.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy and timeliness.
- Ability to work well under pressure with multiple competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Power Point and various other business applications.
- Ability to travel up to 20%.
