Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. LWTech offers 10 applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees, and 80 professional certificates , including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) seeks highly motivated and qualified candidates for the position of Custodian in the Facilities Department. Typical shift assignments range between Days, Swing and Night. We offer shift differentials for Swing and Night shifts.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) Custodial Services Department within Facilities and Operations supports the College’s primary mission by cleaning and maintaining internal and external areas of all College Facilities and other assets. The department works in compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following LWTech’s policies, follows and maintains safety procedures and follow-up Facilities and Operations program on accidents and safety prevention techniques. The department also follows APPA’s Operational Guidelines as well as continuously improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in routine training sessions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties
  • Operates and Performs various housekeeping, janitorial and custodial tasks
  • Cleans and disinfects various buildings, offices, rooms, labs, common areas, institutional and non-institutional facilities;
  • Cleans, sanitizes and disinfects showers and restrooms.
  • Disinfects door handles, counters, light switches and most touched surfaces.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors, walls and woodwork, shampoo carpets, dusts furniture and equipment; empties wastebaskets, trash, recycle and compost container.
  • Polishes furniture and metal fixtures; washes windows.
  • Keeps building entrances and walkways free of ice, snow, leaves, garbage and other debris.
  • Operates machinery necessary to perform job including upright and backpack vacuum cleaners, ride-on vacuums/extractors, blowers, scrubbers, upholstery cleaners, buffing machines, water extractors, and carpet shampooers.
Upkeeps Storage closets, equipment and supplies
  • Stacks and replenishes supplies and products in designated areas.
  • Keeps designated areas properly supplied with paper products, soap, and other items; Maintains electric powered janitorial tools.
  • Replaces furnishings, burned out light bulbs/fixtures and other miscellaneous objects. Upkeeps the custodial storage rooms, maintain inventory of supplies and products as needed and the assigned equipment.
  • Maintains assigned equipment to be clean and in a proper working order.
  • Facilitates work request system and support Campus Operations procedures
  • Maintains assigned area in a clean and safe condition according to LWTech’s procedures; Assists in covering other runs in accordance to need.
  • Moves furniture and equipment; Set-ups and breakdowns of campus functions.
  • Improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors.
Other
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following LWTech’s policies, procedures and direction directed by the Facilities and Operations management or supervisor.
  • Follows and maintains health and safety procedures and follow-up Facilities and Operations program on accidents and safety prevention techniques.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a service industry
  • Ability to follow spoken and written instructions in English
  • Ability to speak languages other than English
  • Have a valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Know Basic Computer skills
  • Regularly lift 50 pounds
  • Climb ladders and scaffolding
Note: In terms of an 8-hour workday, continuously: walk and stand. On an occasional basis will be exposed to dust, fumes, gases and commercial-strength chemicals, marked changes in temperature/humidity, and around moving machinery. Frequently: lift and/or carry up to 25 lbs.; bend, squat, crawl, climb, and reach above shoulder level and twist. Will also be required to use both left and right hands for repetitive action such as grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine manipulating. Occasionally: sit, push/pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs. Generally, the job requires 65% walking, 20% standing, and 15% sitting.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Compensation & Work Schedule
As defined by the current bargained agreement, newly hired employees shall be placed between Step 1 $3,578 and Step 5 $3,797 of the salary schedule in Appendix A of the Union Bargaining Agreement. Ongoing (Step 6-Step 11) step advancement is defined by the bargained agreement.

This is a 40 hour per week position. The typical working hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 p.m.-2:30 a.m.
