Purpose of the Role: The District Court Constables are official representatives of the court whereas they serve civil process. They oversee evictions of tenants, seize real or personal property in order to satisfy debts against debtors, post rents/warrants on property address, schedule eviction dates and times with landlords, and perform evictions for properties in the area. Serve writ of summons of all types of civil and landlord/tenant cases. Receive, strip, and mail out rents and warrants. Constables are assigned primarily to a specific district but may be required to work in all districts as needed and/or may be required to work evenings and weekends.
Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience: At least one (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, or in the fields of criminal justice, parole, and probation, legal or financial services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment
- Knowledge of alpha and numerical filing system
- Knowledge of basic legal terminology and able to communicate effectively using such with court personnel and ancillary agencies.
- Knowledge of standard legal forms and documents used in the Maryland District Courts.
- Ability to operate a personal computer.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and provide information in a polite and efficient manner both in person and on the phone.
- Ability to maintain and use a detailed filing system
- Ability to verify scanned documents from other co-workers.
- Ability to exercise tact and understanding in pressured situations.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
