On any given day, you ll:
- Compile, research, analyze and evaluate data related to demographics, social, economic, environmental, land use, transportation, housing, parks and recreation and infrastructure to prepare reports, maps and presentations for project deliverables and grants.
- Conduct field evaluations and assessments for planning and urban design projects.
- Prepare downtown strategic plans, community redevelopment plans, zoning & land development codes, housing strategies, land development feasibility and regulatory applications.
- Review and prepare environmental assessments, plans and documents.
- Attend public workshops, charettes, evening meetings and public hearings.
- Develop a professional network to enhance business development opportunities.
- Evaluate project opportunities to respond to requests for proposals and task orders.
- Engage with internal and external clients consisting of public officials, urban planners, landscape architects, environmental professionals, civil engineers, transportation engineers and land surveyors to provide project inputs.
- Work with passionate internal teams and strong external clients to assist them with land use planning, economic development, grants, and urban design.
Required qualifications:
- A bachelor s degree in urban planning or urban development.
- An urban planner certificate or working toward its receipt.
- 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of land use, community planning, urban design, public engagement, grants, and funding.
- Knowledge of municipal organization, operations, policies, procedures, and proficiency with municipal and state laws governing land use and environmental codes and ordinances.
- Valid driver s license with a good driving record.
Desired skills and experiences:
- Ability to work effectively independent, as well as in a collaborative team environment.
- Knowledge and practice of community development, urban land-use planning and community engagement, funding research and grant writing skills, and brownfield revitalization.
- A strong, professional network along with a body of work – either public sector projects managed for a locality, or private sector project experience.
- Experience in both the public and private sector along with strong management responsibilities.
- Experience with zoning, development code interpretation, site plan reviews, urban and rural redevelopment, land-use plans, and site conceptual design.
- Ability to visualize, critique designs, and quickly craft development strategies and solutions.
- Render plans and ideas via sketches and/or computer graphics and direct team to prepare designs.
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup, ArcGIS and CAD are preferred but not required.
- Experience participating in presentations and the preparation of proposals, budgets, and project timelines.
- Engagement in practice and thought leadership activities related to sustainability, resilience, and climate change.
