Cave Guide Interpreters prepare and present interpretive tours of the Oregon Caves, assist our education program, and represent the park at outreach events. The primary focus for our guides is the presentation of up to three, 90-minute interpretive ‘Discovery Cave Tours.’ The focus of these tours is cave geology and the earth sciences generally. Guides also present a 60-minute ‘Adventure Candlelight Tour” in historical costume. During the spring months, the guide will present curriculum-driven environmental education geology and cave tour education programs for elementary school students and watershed programs for middle school students. The guides will attend occasional community outreach events including festivals and parades to represent the park. Enthusiasm, good customer service skills, public speaking and and the ability to learn in-depth knowledge of the earth sciences, especially geology, are essential to succeed in the position. Guides receive interpretive develop program training, attend sessions about the earth sciences of the cave, education program training, and tour operations training. Applicants must have the mental and physical ability to lead as many as four, 90-minute cave tours each day. The complete tour is almost a mile long. It involves twisting and bending through low, narrow cave passages, including ceilings as low as 45”, sometimes with flashlights in dark “blackout” conditions.

Compensation

  • $250/week* Living Allowance
  • $1,100* To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck
  • Housing provided on-site
  • Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,247, received upon successful completion of position
  • Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (640hrs minimum of service)
  • All Allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

AmeriCorps Background Check

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

  • Location Description
    The Oregon Caves National Monument is located at 4,000 feet in the rugged and beautiful Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon, a region widely recognized for its complex geology and biological diversity. The residence area, visitor center, and historic lodge are all nestled around the cave entrance within the Oregon Caves Historic District under a canopy of conifers, maple, and madrone trees. On-site rustic dormitory housing is provided. Several trailheads lead from the district into the surrounding mountains. Twenty miles to the north the town of Cave Junction offers groceries, several restaurants, and basic amenities. A car is necessary to reach town. Grants Pass, 50-miles distant, offers a wider range of amenities, including a hospital and major retail outlets. The ocean and Redwoods National and State Parks are a two-hour drive west. Crater Lake National Park is within three hours.
