NATURE OF WORK
Skilled journey level carpentry work constructing and repairing buildings and furniture.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of supervisory duties and from lower classes by its skilled nature.
EXAMPLES OF WORK**
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Constructs, repairs, and maintains doors, floors, windows, partitions, roofs, and other parts of buildings.
Constructs and repairs tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters, and similar items.
Replaces broken window panes.
Installs and repairs hardware on doors and windows.
Builds rough wooden structures including pole barns, warehouses, pavilions, concrete forms, fences, and scaffolds. Does sheeting and rough carpentry on sheds and other buildings.
Performs hand and bench work in a carpenter shop.
Maintains and operates planers, joiners, power saws, and related carpentry equipment.
Works from sketches and blueprints.
Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and three years experience in journey level carpentry, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
NOTES
Work requires physical strength and agility.
Work may require performance of tasks at elevated levels.
Work may require exposure to prolonged high noise levels.
Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climactic conditions.
Work may require performance of tasks in extreme heat and confined areas.
Special skills and requirements may be made depending on needs of the department.
SELECTION FACTORS
Thorough knowledge of standard practices, processes, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned area of responsibility.
Ability to operate work related equipment including saws, squares, rules, brace and bits, planes, hammers, chisels, and power-driven machinery including saws, mortises, lathes, joiners, sharpers, and other carpentry tools.
Ability to plan, lay out, and perform journey level carpentry work.
Ability to work from sketches and blueprints.
