Caregiver/Personal Assistant Day Shift Job at Elite Care
Personal Assistants (PA) are the backbone of the Elite Care organization and the first, last, and most frequent point of contact with residents each day. The PA assists the resident in maintaining their independence and quality of life by performing tasks and duties to support the resident’s physical and psychological health. Additionally, a PA promotes the Elite Care culture by fostering resident engagement and belonging, encouraging individual choice, and creating opportunities where residents can experience purpose and self-fulfillment. PAs must have strong interpersonal skills, effective communication, and an empathetic understanding of the resident and their history and strengths. The person in this role must be people-oriented, self-directed, and a builder of authentic relationships. The major responsibilities of the PA position are broken down into six categories: resident care; documentation and portaling; household duties/cleaning, teamwork and cooperation, training, development and compliance; and representing Elite Care. Each category is detailed below. Ultimately, it is the PA’s responsibility to provide best-in-class resident care, build relationships with residents, and keep the houses running smoothly and harmoniously.
Resident Care
- Deliver services and assist with Activities of Daily Life (ADLs) as outlined in a resident’s Service Plan (SP) with respect, empathy, competence, and encouragement throughout the residents’ day
- Understand and follow each resident’s Service Plan
- Assist with ADLs such as dressing, showering, toileting, incontinence care, eating, and grooming
- Hair Care: Wash, brush/comb, style
- Facial Hair: Trim, groom, shave, aftershave, etc
- Nail Care: Clean (trim and maintain only if stated in SP)
- Foot Care: Clean (trim and maintain only if stated in SP)
- Showering/Bathing: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Dressing: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Toileting: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Incontinence Care: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Grooming: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Other Effects: Put on, take off, clean, and store hearing aids, eye glasses, false teeth, jewelry, special stockings, etc
- Ambulation and Mobility: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Transfers: Assist with or fully perform as stated in SP
- Take Vitals: Document as needed
- Positioning, repositioning and alignment of resident as needed or as stated in SP
- Eating and Dining: Encourage eating and drinking, assist with eating and drinking, sit with resident and model behavior
- Provide other care and duties as needed to give residents high quality of life and experiences
- Apply practical intervention procedures for dementia or memory issues.
- Care for resident’s pets as needed: Feed, water, groom, bathe, take for walks, clean up after, and/or clean litter boxes
- Follow and consistently build the simple routines and organizational structures of each house
- Use the Daily Team Huddle as a temporal guide
- Observe and encourage residents to participate in daily activities and milestones
- Actively participate in the household with the residents, families and other staff
- Spend 90% of shift time with and near residents
- Have fun with and enjoy spending quality time with residents
- Maintain positive social interaction with all residents in the household
- Engage residents in daily operations of the household to the utmost of their ability
- Actively seek and incorporate residents’ opinions
- Build relationships with residents and others in the house
Documentation, Reporting, and Portaling
- Document detailed reporting of the ADL care completed and any observations made in the electronic portal, MARs, or handwritten reports, etc. as required
- Identify and promptly report changes in resident health status and/or daily routine in the Daily Team huddle, to the CM & RN/LPN, and in the Progress Notes
- Provide detailed and complete documentation and reporting of incidents and behaviors (IRs)
Household Duties (Cleaning, Laundry, Kitchen, Etc)
- Complete daily checklist of cleaning duties and NOC shift cleaning duties if applicable
- Tidy up and pick up suites to reduce clutter
- Dispose of garbage
- Remove soiled briefs (Depends)
- Make residents’ beds, change linens, smooth out blankets and bedspreads, and fluff pillows
- Perform laundry services for residents according to specifications in SP, including but not limited to: separating, washing, drying, hanging, folding, putting away/storing
- Maintain household systems and residents’ rooms.
- Report damages and safety hazards to community manager
- Assist in kitchen duties, including but not limited to; setting tables, clearing tables, rinsing and washing dishes, loading and unloading dishwasher, preparing food, storing food properly
- Other duties/tasks as assigned
Teamwork and Cooperation
- Attend and participate in daily team huddles and pass downs, house staff meetings, all staff meetings, family night, service planning meetings, etc.
- Share resident-specific care strategies during the Daily Team Huddle and at other times as necessary
- Communicate professionally and build supportive relationships with all members of the team including manager(s), nurse, chef, activity coordinator, med techs and other care staff
- Build supportive relationships with residents and their family members
Training, Development, and Compliance
- Keep up-to-date on required training and in-service hours (not less than 12 hours per year or approximately one hour per month) including Food Handlers card, First Aid (CPR if required), dementia training, and other state and company mandated training
- Maintain competency in techniques as outlined in the competency checklist
- Follow Elite Care procedures and adhere to the guidelines set forth for processes that have been put in place
- Maintain knowledge of and compliance with Residents’ Rights and reports any concern immediately to Community Manager
- Disclose unethical, concerning, or inappropriate behavior in the workplace to your manager or a superior
Represent Elite Care professionally and proudly
- Follow all company policies
- Read and stay familiar with the most recent policies and expectations in the workplace
- Maintain excellent attendance in line with the Elite Care’s attendance policy
- Arrive to work on time ready to work and complete shift
- Use proper call-out procedure and CALL your Manager four (4) hours in advance when calling out.
- Clock in and out of the timekeeping system using appropriate codes
- Takes break and meal periods
- Maintain safety at all times and report unsafe conditions to management as soon as aware
- Keep discussions light and professional by maintaining appropriate conversations and avoiding innuendo
- Only use personal cell phone on break and meal periods, as personal cell phones are not allowed on the floor without prior authorization
- Perform other duties as assigned and offer to assist others when you see the need arises
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Value and respect of elders
- Speak, read, and write English
- Excellent oral communication
- Good reading comprehension skills
- Good written communication with ability to correspond and document properly in charts and portal
- Preferred Education
- Education and/or training in aging, social services, adult services or other related field
- CNA
- Required Physical Ability
- Able to turn and move individuals who require assistance
- Able to stay on feet and remain active throughout shift
- Must be able to bend, stoop, twist, reach, squat often throughout shift
- 50 lb lifting requirement
