The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.

Project Description

The selected intern will be a member of the Bureau of Administrative Services, completing projects for the following units: Annual Compliance Fees, Financial Assurance Mechanisms, and Records Management. This intern will learn about and participate in the work conducted by several different positions at the DEP related to fiscal, data management, and records management activities.

Description of Internship Duties

  • General administrative activities including scanning reference documents, interacting with the public via phone/email as applicable, data entry in various MassDEP data systems, etc.
  • Complete records management digitization projects including scanning, quality assurance, and file organization.
  • Conduct electronic records management activities in coordination with the Records Manager.
  • Annual Compliance Fees collections activities including data analysis (Access queries, Excel pivot tables, etc.), report development, organizing and providing documentation to the debt collection agency for use in litigation, coordination with Regional DEP Program representatives as necessary, etc.
  • Assist Annual Compliance Fees coordinator in activities related to invoice printing and mailing in conjunction with the Department's annual compliance fee billing cycle.
  • Establishment/update of standard operating procedures and guidance/reference documents.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Requested

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and general computer skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently while also interacting effectively in a team environment.
  • Data analysis and reporting skills.
  • Effective communication skills including technical writing skills.

Qualifications:

Applicants are required to:

  • Be enrolled in a degree program; or
  • Have received their degree within one year of their date of graduation date

This is an intern contracted position for up to 22.5 hours per week

$21.00 an hour/undergrad degree

$26.00 an hour/graduate degree

Employees must have the ability to commute to MassDEP Massachusetts locations.
