SALARY:
The salary range for this position is $72,391.16 to $112,819.59 for Schedule A, and $72,391.16 to $107,178.61 for Schedule B. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater. Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A. Newly hired individuals, and Judiciary employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.

The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking an experienced attorney with strong legal writing, analytical, and communication skills to join the Office of Trial Court Services, Municipal Court Services Division located in Trenton, NJ. Under the direction of the Court Executive 2B, the selected candidate will conduct legal research, draft memoranda on complex legal issues related to various areas of municipal court practice, and work closely with court executives and judges. The successful candidate will be able to communicate well and collaborate effectively with other team members. Some knowledge of litigation practice is helpful.

REMOTE WORK: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.

Example of Duties

  • Prepare clear reports/memoranda based on legal research to determine proper application of law to new or existing situations
  • Review and analyze court programs, policies, and procedures for compliance with laws, court rules, or administrative directives
  • Keep updated on and analyze court opinions and legislation affecting the Municipal Courts
  • Provide legal guidance to the Municipal Court Administrator Certification Board, including on disciplinary issues
  • Staff diverse conferences, working groups, and committees – communicate with judges, court executives, and other stakeholders; provide legal research; draft meeting summaries; and contribute to discussions as needed
  • Contribute to the drafting of administrative directives and other policy level documents that provide direction to the Municipal Court system
  • Respond to questions and concerns from attorneys, litigants, and members of the public

Qualifications

Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and one year of experience in legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.

Substitution: One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.

Supplemental Information

Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.

Residency Law: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
