ASSOCIATE PASTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Associate Pastor
STATUS: Part-Time preferred, full-time considered
SALARY: Commensurate with experience
HOURS: 20 Hours per week part-time, preferred
BENEFITS: Health Insurance, Parsonage, Other benefits negotiable
GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: To work in concert with the lead pastor and staff in order to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
SUPERVISION: Reports to the Lead Pastor. The Staff Parish Relations Committee provides an annual evaluation of the Associate Pastor’s performance. Operates with considerable independence within areas of responsibility described below subject to the United Methodist Discipline and local church policy as determined by the church committee(s) with authority over the ministry area involved.
A candidate being considered as an Associate Pastor to NBUMC should:
- Be ready to have their primary responsibility be preaching and some pastoral care.
- Also be willing to lead Sunday School classes, Bible studies, and other groups.
- Possess the ability to work with and respond to members of the congregation in a peaceful and loving manner.
- Maintain an “open door” and willingness to listen for understanding
- Possess an understanding of and be respectful to those of a military background given our location and the many members of the congregation who are a part of the military
- Exhibit a dynamic personality with ability to connect with all and increase unity within the congregation
- Following the strategic guidance of the Lead Pastor, work with both paid and unpaid ministry leaders to ensure they receive appropriate development and training, provide necessary support to leaders so that they can foster and nurture volunteers, and connect leaders throughout the church.
- Following the strategic guidance of the Lead Pastor, manage the ministry and direct the paid and unpaid staff and volunteers dedicated to serving the various ministries for which the Associate Pastor carries primary responsibility. Management includes developing project plans, organizing and managing volunteers, recruiting participants, and performing some administrative tasks.
- Help to grow our various outreach programs in coordination with our Community Outreach Coordinator
- Be willing to work with the Youth Coordinators to grow the Youth and Young Adult programs
Specific qualifications we are looking for at this time include:
- Possess a traditional mindset with a biblically orthodox view of scripture. This is an imperative and vital quality of a new Associate Pastor to NBUMC. This request is based upon a congregational survey and subsequent conversations.
- The Associate Pastor candidate must respect those who disagree with them theologically both publicly and actually - affirming that while they have an opinion, they are not convinced that they have infallible access to God’s opinion on this matter. We have a variety of opinions here, and they have to be respected.
- Be willing to commit to our congregation for 2 or more years
Desirable Qualifications:
- Embrace Christian discipline and Wesleyan doctrine and theology.
- Licensed or ordained
- A Master of Divinity (MDiv) or the equivalent in a related field or progress towards such a degree
- Four years of experience working in a church.
- Must have vision and a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement ministry within the parameters of the church.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, and technical skills.
- Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with congregation, diverse individuals, and teams of volunteers.
Other:
Candidate must provide 2 to 3 recent recorded sermons for viewing by the search committee.
