The Work
The editorial team is responsible for leading the content development efforts for our media websites – Police1.com, FireRescue1.com, EMS1.com and Corrections1.com. Content includes industry news, incident analysis, training, resource guides, product buying guides, human-interest profiles, and research surveys, as well as multi-media content like podcasts, webinars and videos.
We promote and distribute that content through daily eNewsletters and social media posts across popular social networks. As a team, we provide public safety personnel with the information and resources they need to do their jobs more effectively and more safely for them and their communities. Our editorial team is comprised of experienced, collaborative and hard-working editorial professionals.
The Assistant Editor - News plays a critical role on the award-winning Lexipol Media Group news team by finding and posting news from syndicated and aggregated sources, creating original high-engagement multimedia content, producing email newsletters and contributing to special coverage on the top media news sites for first responders.
The Assistant Editor – News thrives in a fast-paced news environment, has excellent news judgment and can switch between tasks at a moment’s notice. Distribution of Focus
The work of the Assistant Editor – News is done in these areas of focus:
- News discovery (20%): Daily sourcing and selection of 8 to 10 news stories from diverse news sources, including wire services, social channels, consumer media and other industry sources.
- Posting news in the CMS (35%): Efficiently load news into the Content Management System with a high emphasis on compelling and click-worthy heds, accurate ledes and correct formatting within style guidelines.
- Publishing eNewsletters (15%): Primary owner of building, testing and sending daily eNewsletters.
- High-engagement multi-media content creation (20%): Under the direction of the News Editor and supervision of the Editor-in-Chief, create high-engagement video, such as news explainer videos for the sites and social channel distribution.
- Analytics (5%): Monitor the real-time and ongoing performance of news items to make informed decisions about follow-up coverage, daily news selections and continuous improvement of hed and dek construction.
- Professional development (5%): Learning and upskilling to broaden capabilities within the current position and preparation for additional roles and responsibilities.
News discovery (20%):
- Jump into action every morning by scouring Google News, social channels and wire services for first responder-focused news stories with high potential to drive traffic to the sites.
- Curate the best possible 8 to 10 news stories from those sources.
- Consult with the News Editor to ensure news lineup is relevant, timely, accurate and sure to drive readers to the sites.
- Continue to check news sources throughout the day for breaking news.
- Receive and monitor breaking news alerts throughout the workday.
Posting news in the CMS (35%):
- Efficiently load news into the CMS.
- Write compelling and click-worthy headlines for all news stories.
- Use local news reports, social media messages, and press releases to create aggregated news items that are accurate and relevant to the audience.
- Always adhere to Associate Press (AP) style and in-house style guide to apply correct formatting to news articles.
- Follow LMG news team processes to add photos, associate topics and product categories and create internal links to promote related content.
- Check your own work to minimize mistakes and maximize news article performance.
- Post breaking news as you find it or are directed to do so by the News Editor.
Building, testing and sending eNewsletters (15%):
- Distribute news to 300,000+ subscribers through daily creation of eNewsletters.
- Build daily eNewsletters, one or more each day, with the CMS.
- Write multiple eNewsletter subject lines for A/B testing.
- Test and send the eNewsletters using email service provider’s software.
High-engagement multi-media content creation (20%):
- Work collaboratively with the News Editor and Editor-in-Chief to create a production process for news explainer videos.
- Use video creation and editing software to create news explainer videos.
- Upload news explainer videos to social channels – YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Optimize video titles, descriptions and hashtags to maximize video performance and grow subscribers.
- Monitor performance of news explainer videos to improve existing formats and create news formats.
Analytics (5%):
- Check real-time performance of news articles at least once per day, usually after the eNewsletter is sent.
- Review weekly traffic reports with specific attention to top performing news and eNewsletter subject lines.
- Use analytics monitoring, real-time and weekly, to inform decisions about news selection, news posting prioritizing and hed/dek writing.
Professional development (5%):
- Develop a learning planning with the Editor-in-Chief.
- Proactively identify skills and topics relevant to the position and pursue additional learning through courses, articles and videos.
- Regularly complete learning plan components.
- Apply professional development learning to Assistant Editor responsibilities.
Requirements: To be considered for this role, you will have this experience:
- 1-2 years of online or digital news experience.
- Degree in journalism, digital media or similar.
- Strong attention to detail, as evidenced by excellent and error-free written communication, past news writing and other work samples.
- Proven ability to learn, use and optimize use of writing and digital media tools (content management system, social posting, eNewsletter building).
- Evidence of journalistic curiosity to learn about and adapt to a new audience.
- Advanced-to-expert level skill with MS Office products.
- Strong interest in news and understanding how to find news online, from Facebook to Google to Twitter to TikTok to Instagram to Reddit and more.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced daily deadline-driven environment.
- Exceptional writing and copyediting skills, attention to detail, with a command of Associated Press (AP) style.
- Great self-editing, with a knack for delivering clean copy with limited errors.
- Knowledge of SEO fundamentals and best practices for optimizing news content for the web.
- Experience using social media to drive traffic and source content for articles,
- Tech-capable, with prior experience using a content management system (CMS) and other digital publishing tools.
Preferred Experience:
- Using graphic design tools, like Canva, to create news explainer videos, video thumbnails, and infographics.
- Experience as brand or personal creator of social media content on multiple social media platforms
- Working as a public safety reporter or editor.
- Experimenting with new and emerging content creation tools, like ChatGPT.
