ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Assistant Director’s overall responsibility is to support and contribute to the mission and operations of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion through relevant DEI programming, mentorship of students of color, administrative support, and by contributing to the development of a vibrant and caring community where students, faculty, and staff of color are represented and empowered through their journey at Green River College. This role establishes and maintains an active, visible, and deeply engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members in our service area. This role provides mentorship to students of color and underrepresented students through the creation and implementation of support services and creating a sense of belonging among ODEI student groups. The position specifically supports initiatives and programs aimed at diversity, equity, and inclusion and community engagement. This position reports to the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and supervises the Program Coordinator of ODEI (classified) position. This role supports the ODEI student leaders through mentorship and guidance through their educational journey at GRC and ODEI.

Position Responsibilities

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Programming & Educational Opportunities

Diversity Educational Series

  • Take a lead role in planning, implementing, and assessing DEI programming, such as the Diversity Educational Series.
  • Identify opportunities for development, campus awareness and student advocacy, and commit to ongoing learning regarding matters related to multicultural and social justice developments.
  • Collaborate with relevant constituencies to provide relevant, meaningful, and effective events and programs.
  • Produce data and assessment materials regarding the effectiveness, relevance, and success of DEI programming within ODEI.
  • Recommend speakers, scholars, and community members to connect with and invite to campus.
  • Plan, develop, and implement culturally relevant programming, events, and gatherings as needed.
  • Assess and plan programming budget.
  • Provide guidance and insight on ways to strengthen and improve ODEI- DEI educational opportunities.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Assist in recruitment and training of ODEI student leaders through the summer leadership program and ongoing DEI training throughout the academic year.
  • Supervise the Program Coordinator position and offer guidance on the administrative operations and services for ODEI.
  • Collaborate with College Relations to produce and update materials relating to ODEI.
  • Serve on hiring committees as needed.
  • Effectively communicate with GRC students through student email, canvas, and participate in campus events.
  • Provide referrals of students to other campus departments and community services as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership on evaluation and strategic planning for operations and services for students of color and underrepresented student populations.
  • Assist Director with departmental planning goals and objectives, development of annual budget, and help ensure budget items are initiated and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Tribal Relations-Indigenous Student Success Manager, Black and Brown Student Success Coordinator, and the Program Coordinator.

Passport to Careers Program

  • Develop, oversee and manage the Passport to Careers grant including developing support services for eligible students.
  • Grant budget management and administration.
  • Attend and participate in the quarterly Passport to Careers meetings representing GRC and ODEI.
  • Create events, programs, and mentorship opportunities for Passport to Careers eligible students.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate group activities, workshops, and seminars to assist Passport to Career eligible students in the development of academic and college navigation skills.
  • Provide mentorship and support to Passport to Careers Peer Navigator.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Keep current professionally by participating in department and College-wide activities and trainings, and when appropriate, attend regional and statewide meetings and trainings.
  • Represent ODEI in college, state, and community entities as needed.
  • Serve as an alternate for the Multicultural Student Services Director’s Council as requested.
  • Serve as an active member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team as an Assistant Director.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in a higher education institution.
  • Knowledge of and skills working in multicultural spaces.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing DEI initiatives in higher education or a comparable setting.
  • Ability to represent and advocate for underrepresented students’ needs.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish rapport and relationship building with various levels of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to be creative, resourceful and critical problem solver.
  • Rooted in representing and serving underrepresented communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working at a community and technical college
  • Ability to read/write/speak more than one language
