The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate light equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, repair and maintenance of Electrical Power, distribution systems, substations, generators, telecommunications systems, lines and related equipment. This is the progressive working/training position to becoming a qualified Line Worker.

Duties

Under direct supervision, operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include a dump truck, backhoe, trencher, bucket truck, line truck, boring rig, tension rig, tamp, tractor, phasing stick, voltage ohmmeter, breakers, regulators, hydraulic tools, jackhammer, air compressor, pipe horn, post hole digger, shovel, axe, saw, chain saw, mechanic tools, etc.).

Performs routine general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop and work areas, etc.); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Under direct supervision, performs manual work functions associated with maintaining right-of-ways, ditches and holding ponds which may include trimming trees, removing stumps and debris, mowing grass and performing related tasks.

Under direct supervision, performs manual work functions associated with substation maintenance as well as construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include assisting with laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.).

Under direct supervision, may perform manual work associated with the operation, management and maintenance of Utility and privately owned generators.

Under direct supervision, assists in installing, maintaining and repairing underground and overhead structures including high mast lighting and street light systems, poles, cables and related equipment to carry power transmission/distribution lines used to conduct electrical energy between generating stations, substations and consumers.

Will be required to work after normal business hours, weekends and holidays in the event of a natural disaster, power outages, down power lines, trees, etc. or any disruption of service to Albany Utility customers; during periods of severe weather, required to notify immediate supervisor and/or Energy Control for any instructions; may be assigned to alternate hours of operation without prior notice; may work altered schedules on normal routine work as well as storm related or load management purposes.

Under direct supervision, may assist in installing transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, wire conductors and auxiliary equipment to poles.

Operates a two-way radio in the performance of duties.

Under direct supervision, may assist in opening switches or clamping grounding device to energized equipment to de-energize lines or accessories.
Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and mater
ials used in projects.

Maintains adequate supply of equipment, tools, supplies and materials on trucks for use at work sites.

Utilizes precautionary work methods and safety equipment to ensure crew and public safety.

Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.

Installs, maintains and removes decorations and lights during holiday seasons.
Under direct supervision, may assist with manual tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of the Fiber Optic telecommunications system.

Will be required to participate in and complete the Accredited Apprentice Lineman Training program through the Electric Cities of Georgia, which will require out of town travel; required to climb wood poles, complete homework and class room assignments with written test and hands on testing.

This is a progressive position that requires continuance training and work functions and responsibilities increase as the level of training and qualifications increase; in the entry level of this position, the employee is not allowed to work any energized voltages under any circumstance; by the third year of training, the employee should be qualified to work some low voltage with no supervision and work medium to high voltage under direct supervision.

Must remain on a progressive path outlined to become a fully qualified lineman which will require self-motivation and discipline to accomplish tasks off the job and without direct supervision; will be required to follow strict safety rules, national, state and local codes and specifications.

Will be required to complete CPR, GDOT Flagging, Pole Top & Bucket Truck Rescue training and certifications.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.

May be temporarily assigned to tree crew, directional drilling crew, substation or any other light department crew as needed.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; supplemented by 6 to 12 months previous experience and/or training operating light equipment required; or any equivalent combination of education (such as technical training in Apprentice Lineman program), training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with appropriate endorsements preferred or be able to obtain within a six month orientation period. Must complete required CPR training.
